In its combat against desertification, in December 1974, the United Nations general Assembly passed a resolution that called for a United Nations Conference on Desertification, focusing on international action to combat desertification.  The Plan of action to Combat Desertification (PACD) was adopted, and the Desertification Control Programme Activity Center within the United Nations Environmental Program was established. The 1977, Convention resolved that the group pass the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) plan by June 1994; as a result, on December 26, 1996, the UNCCD, officially came into effect. Since 1977, commencing with the UNCCD, international community has been preparing and implementing countermeasures against desertification. Additionally, in order to highlight the economic, social, and environmental concerns associated with desertification, the UN General Assembly declared June 17, the day on which the UNCCD was passed, as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought? (Lee Min Hee, 2005).
