The Mongolian government joined the UNCCD; with the goal of preserving the environment and preventing desertification, they organized the Committee to Combat Desertification. The government also designated 11% of its national territory as natural preserve areas and countinyes to manage the lands as well as carry out various related projects and forestation activities. Internationally, the Mongolian government requests private and non-governmental organizations (NGO) to participate in its fight against desertification while continuing with the introduction of sustainable land management systems domestically. The government is also actively involved in such desertification activities as research and development of forest renewal measures, forestation, and cultivation of saplings, and continues its requests for financial and technical support from other countries such as Japan, Korea, Germany, and the United States. The government has launched an extensive desertification-prevention promotion by planting trees in the deserts and desolated mountain areas, controlling the number of livestock that graze on its land, preventing desertification, and protecting the grasslands (Luvsandash, 2010). Nogoon Herem, also known as the ?Green Wall Project,? conducted by the Mongolian government, aims to decrease desertification and yellow dust and continue efforts to increase forest area.
