Scavenger as Part of The Waste Management System

Indonesia has scavengers that collects recyclable trash on the streets and give them to a trash collector in which they get paid in return. There are also other types of collector that comes to peoples house to receive recyclable trash in larger amounts. These collectors would give the people they receive recyclable trash some money, and the collectors would still receive money when they store the trash back at the main trash collector. The recyclable trash at the main trash collector are then recycled and made into different products. I believe they are also sold to companies that make recycle products.

Indonesia waste management system is not the best. There are still many trashes that leak to the rivers and later on to the ocean. That is why these scavengers actually play a vital role in preventing recyclable trash from ending up in the rivers and ocean. Scavengers collect trash they find on the side of the road, sometimes they would also search for plastic bottles in trash can. It is really saddening, especially since scavenger receives a small amount of money for the trash they collect.

    Hello Ida!
    It's your SJ mentor.

I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for writing a report on Indonesia's garbage collection system.
In Korea, street cleaners are all government officials who are paid well above the minimum wage.
In Indonesia, I wonder if individuals work for their own interests, not for street cleaners designated by the state.
There are collection centers that collect waste streams in Korea, but it is said that these projects are difficult to operate due to the low scrap prices and discarded paper price.
A lot of garbage is spilled into the sea because all the streams and water flow leads to the sea.
Korea also tries to prevent this, but it is hard to say that there is no trash that is leaked at all.
A lot of garbage has already been leaked and is forming a garbage island in the Pacific Ocean, and I hope that countries along the Pacific coast will cooperate to solve this problem.

    Green cheers!

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Ida,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Warm greetings from South Korea!
Thank you for sharing such an informative report.
I am glad to hear that the scavengers are preventing further contamination due to the plastics.
I think that South Korea waste management is quite well organized, but its process is still hard because there are people who illegally dispose the wastes or do not follow the regulations.
We do not have scavengers in here, but yes we pay money in return to those who bring crystal bottles back to the convenience stores in order to recycle or reuse the bottles.
Hopefully people get more aware of the pollution caused by wastes and reduce their use!

    Regards,
    WooJoo
