[thematic report] Wastes and the environment - Watoto Vision on Africa(WVA) organisation in Rwanda

by Kevin RUSAGARA IRAGUHA | 24-02-2021 00:43 recommendations 0

In our daily lives, we eat, wear, rub and produce materials. And after the great production of such things and also after their usage. They  are no longer meant to be of use but instead wastes and moreover their poor disposal or dumping causes much bad effects to the environment however, if they are correctly dumped they can be of much use, for example; the proper disposal of wastes that can rot can help in the synthesizing of fertilizers that would help in the other production.

But here I will be discussing a few of some of the bad effects that the poor disposal of wastes or the wastes generally, cause to the humans and the environment in my community and what environmental waste reducing plans that are in my country.

As we all know, some wastes can eventually rot whereas others can't rot. and while those that rot are in the process of decomposition so as to be decomposed or rotten or when the bacteria are working on them to decompose. Amidst of that process, these wastes can smell and they generate the methane gas which is kind of explosive and has a great contribution to the greenhouse effects hence these wastes cause a serious harm to our environment.
And also there are other solid wastes that can't rot, and this causes more harm to the life on water and also on land including the air and water pollution. And so Rwanda has been involved in finding some of the solution to this solid wastes problems.

Indeed, the poor disposal of wastes has got a lot of negative effects to the environment, even the one mentioned above included, however my country Rwanda has got a waste reducing plan whereby an organisation whose motto is "From wastes to Revenue" has started a recycling process and the country is more engaged in it. This organisation is called Watoto Vision on Africa (WVA) whereby this was started by the local Rwandans and it is working to provide opportunities for sustainable livelihoods to the communities engaged. This organisation helps our country in a way that it runs a project in Rwanda's one dumping site located in Gasabo district.

WVA runs a project in this landfill of Gasabo district whereby it runs a project that aims at alleviating the problem of solid waste management.
This process is in a way thta talented women especially are the ones empowered also to boost their self confidence, and tese collect usable pieces of trash fom that landfill/tip, then these WVA members clean those pieces, they revamp them and then they repurpose these wastes into products that can be sold. And through this they help to sustain for our environment.
WVA has established a growing circular and recycling model that benefits the community, moreover it is driven by mostly women whereby they produce handicrafts produced solely from the local solid waste instead of being overloaded in the dumping sites and overload.

Rwanda is looking forward to work with and develop such organisations and even be able to contribute more so as to ensure the well being of our environment.  Sustainability wins.

Green cheers!!!!

    Hello Kevin!
    It's your SJ mentor.

I hope you are doing well.
Thank you for writing a nice and informative report.
As you said, waste is divided into biodegradable and non-degradable one.
When waste decomposes, methane gas is produced, and in Korea, methane gas is collected and used as fuel.
In addition, special treatment is performed on the lower part to prevent leachate.
When the landfills are filled, efforts are made to create a park above them to create a space for citizens.
I wonder how the WVA you introduced handles waste and recycles it as a product.

    Green cheers!

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Kevin,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Warm greetings from South Korea!
Thank you for sharing your last thematic report of the term!
I agree that the poor disposal is negatively affecting the environmnet, and I am glad that Rwanda is concerned for this problem and is taking actions.
In South Korea, we also have some organizations working for recylcing and upcycling processes like WVA does.
They make multi-color crayons from worn single-colored crayons, or make chairs from disposable masks!
The upcycled handcrafts are being sold as well, and I remember that one of our Ambassadors showed us recycled crafts sold in the city.
Hopefully proper disposals are ensured so that we can increase the recycling rate and produce less!

    Green cheers!

    Regards,
    WooJoo

It is very important to have woman leaders in a country and let them work for sustainable growth. I'm delighted to see that your country has let woman be responsible for waste management, which is in turn the most important work to make a country waste free and healthy.
