Wastes and Environment (Thematic Report)

by Lucas Marcus | 24-02-2021 21:17 recommendations 0

The natural world is home for solid discarded materials (Wastes) from industrial, agricultural or municipal practices. In my country, the government has put in place mechanisms for disposing such wastes which if not properly controlled might negatively impact the environment.

Tanzania produces over 16.9 tons of solid waste per year generated especially in metropolitan towns and this is due to population increase and physical size of these towns. This calls for proper Management of solid waste which is major concern.

We have several types of wastes including general waste, recyclable waste, hazardous waste (organic, biogas, insect derived protein), hospital waste and industrial waste. All these wastes require special treatment from collection to disposal.

Proper infrastructure and sustainable plan need to be in place in order to manage waste disposal without negatively affecting the environment. Besides, progressive research ought to be done on converting solid waste into usable energy. Since waste is continuously generated converting such waste into usable energy it would supply essentially endless source of energy reducing waste and providing a safe means of waste disposal.

    Hello Lucas!
    It's your SJ mentor.

    Warm greetings from Korea!
Thank you for writing an informative article about waste.
Waste can cause a wide range of environmental problems if not properly disposed of.
For example, methane gas can be generated in landfills and leachate can leak, contaminating streams and groundwater.
Therefore, as you said, proper disposal of waste is essential depending on the type.
Currently, it is already commercialized to fuel solid waste and recover energy.
It is necessary to collect and properly purify exhaust gases generated during the combustion process.

    Green cheers!

    Best regards,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Lucas,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Welcome back! :)
Thank you for sharing such an interesting report.
Last year, South Korea had a steep increase in solid waste produced due to the COVID19, which caused people to stay at home for longer periods and finally led to strong dependence on food delivery and online markets.
Tons of solid wastes, including plastics and sanitary items, were disposed, and much of them were unrecyclable.
It would be nice if you can explain to us details about how Tanzania is managing the sollid waste.

    Keep sharing

    Regards,
    WooJoo
