Wind Turbines for your home! | Free Report

Did you know that more and more people are considering wind turbines as a sustainable alternative to solar panels? Not everyone has good weather and sunny days. Furthermore, solar requires expensive and environmentally harmful batteries to store their energy. Turbines are much more friendly to the human consumption behavior and smaller turbines don¡¯t kill birds or bats as industrial scale turbine powerplants do.

Most smaller turbines come with a shaft that allows them to tilt to the direction of the wind. This allows them to have a starting torque of only 0.1 Nm^-2 (only a 4 km/h breeze can start producing electricity). You can buy these today from aliexpress and other stores in your country.

According to sources at US Dept.  Of Energy, an average small wind turbine can take 15 years to have its cost back before incentives whereas an average solar deployment takes 7-8 years after incentives. This makes it seem like solar is the better deal. Point to note that you can use wind turbines in remote parts of Antarctica but not solar. The case for deployment is different. Turbines work through rain and dessert storms (since most of them are plastic) while solars need sunlight. Governments need to look into incentivizing small wind turbines. It is assumed that with the same amount of R& and Development in this sector, small wind turbines can be a better alternative to home solar.

    Hi Mahsinur,
    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

Wow, wind turbines are actually unfamiliar in general households of Korea. I thought they were too massive in size to attach to the roof, in weight and design problems. But in your picture, it seems to be a reasonable size to use it as basic energy production.

I wonder how much energy efficiency it has. Like if the wind is 2~3km/hr speed, how much energy can be produced for a day?

Anyways thanks for the information. This might actually relate to the Aprils' thematic report since it is about green architecture, and it certainly includes how household energy could be generated.

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Mahsinur,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

I guess solar panels and wind turbines each has its advantage and that means that in some regions one will be more suitable than the other. You??ve mentioned that wind turbines are more effective and can become a better alternative, but you have to know that in some areas, there is little wind or storms - but much more sunlight!

One thing for sure, we need to know which one is appropriate under the given circumstances. Thanks for sharing with us, Mahsinur!

    Green Cheers
