(Thematic Report) - A new trend - Upcycling |

Waste management has become such a hot topic these days that terms have emerged to describe different approaches to recycling. And one such example is upcycling. Upcycling is the reuse of things with the creation of new functionality for them. The main difference between upcycling and recycling is that items are not subjected to quite serious industrial recycling in the first case. Since the 1980s, when brands started producing clothes cheaply abroad, the fashion industry has grown exponentially. More than 100 billion clothing items are now produced each year, twice as many as in 2000. According to an Ellen MacArthur report, many consumers wear an item just seven times before they dispose of it. This means that the world is literally drowning in old clothes. It's for these reasons that we need upcycling so badly. In the new Spring/Summer 2021 season upcycling promises to become one of the major trends. Models made with recycled clothes of different degrees of vintage, leftovers from past collections and so on, presented Balenciaga and Marni, Miu Miu and Levis & Ganni, J. W. Anderson, Coach and many others. Recycling is not only eco-friendly but also has several advantages. First, it allows you to save the things you love. Secondly, it is a creative and very interesting process. Figuring out exactly how to use a thing or item and making such a rework is a process that is just as interesting and exciting as sewing from scratch. Third, it's important for the environment. In a situation of oversupply of goods, looming economic crisis and pollution, upcycling has taken on a new broad meaning - reducing the ecological footprint plus reducing costs.

Hi Shirin,
This is your mentor Yuseon:D
I'm so happy to hear that upcycling is the new trend in 2021 S/S season.
As the fashion industry is very influenced with the 'trend' it might actually help many upcycling fashion enterprises to reduce waste to produce new clothes.
In the second part, I think you kind of mixed up the term of recycling with upcycling. They have quite a difference actually!
Keep this in mind, and keep writing:)
Anyway, thanks for sharing this info!

Hi Shirin,
This is your mentor Debbie :)
Seven times?! That is a horrific number!! Hopefully I??m not one of those people who are lowering that average number of times we wear a piece of clothing ..
It??s great to hear that luxury brands are, in a sense, creating the trend of upcycling to something more mainstream. Thanks for sharing this informative article! :D
Green Cheers,

Debbie
