(Free Topic) Food waste and easy ways to reduce it!

by Shirin Shukhratova | 18-06-2021 19:56 recommendations 0

We live in a rather contradictory world where people throw away 80 million tons of food a year while on the other side of the planet our brothers and sisters go hungry. We all know from childhood that throwing away food is bad and many of our grandparents lived through wars in which they starved for months and years. But in our globally changing and consuming world where food is more available than ever before, we have lost its value.

The main producer of food waste is the end consumer, i.e., each one of us. Everyone can remember the situation where he stuffed the fridge with food, and at the end of the week, some of it was thrown in the trash because he forgot to use it. Now, there are 42 tons of these products in the world every second! So it became clear that something had to be done to declare this problem and give some elementary keys to solve it.

And here I will give those recommendations that depend on our hands and with which we ourselves can change the situation:

First of all, we need to plan our purchases, not do them on an empty stomach. I personally have noticed many times that if I go shopping on an empty stomach I always buy something extra.

An important factor is the cleanliness and organization of the refrigerator. To conduct general cleaning and free up space, to remove all the products that you do not use for a long time, and the expiration date of which has long come to an end is an important point. And before you go shopping, always check the contents of the fridge. Perhaps the product you intend to buy you already have and you just don't see it.

Contrary to common practice, most fruits don't need a fridge at all and can be stored just fine at room temperature. Avocados and bananas, for example, are contraindicated in principle, otherwise, they won't ripen or will spoil altogether. And tomatoes, which many people automatically put in the fridge, lose all their nutrients, aroma, and often even taste in it. You should also store onions and garlic, potatoes and beets, pumpkin and carrots outside the refrigerator.

Use paper bags for storage. Cheese can stay fresh for a long time if you store it wrapped in parchment paper or a paper bag - this packaging lets enough air in and keeps the cheese from drying out. You can not store cheese in polyethylene, it will not be able to breathe and will quickly spoil.

To keep the greens fresher for longer, they should be initially washed and thoroughly dried with a paper towel. It is better to store in the refrigerator in a glass jar or a pot with a lid. An alternative storage option is to trim the stems, and put the greens in a glass with water, like flowers, and put them in the refrigerator. A good way to revive greens before cooking is to put them in ice water for a few minutes.

This is just one of the few recommendations I've reviewed and found on the Internet, so if you want to contribute to this cause, look for food preservation tips on your own. So you will make our world a little more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

    Hi Shirin,

    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

Food waste indeed has been a long time problem for all of us.
It has an awful smell, and we need extra more energy to perfectly process all of them.
It would be best to minimize waste with the three methods you've shared with us.

To keep them fresher and longer, minimize paper packages, and etc seems to be reasonable solutions for reducing it. Thanks for sharing;)

    Dear Shirin,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

I was really ashamed when I read ¡°not do them on an empty stomach¡±. Honestly, I know how this feels exactly!! Haha, we need to know how much food we??ll be able to eat in a short time - otherwise many things would go to waste.

Thanks for introducing ways to be more environmental-friendly as well.

    Green Cheers,
    Debbie
