First Palestinian-Lebanese Electric Car - Thematic Report, June

As I was browsing the web, I found that Lebanese people have provided ways to fix fuel based transport. As soon as I knew that Lebanon has produced its own FIRST electric car, I started writing this report to share the news with all of you. Let me take you inside my new favorite car while we discuss the e-transport of Lebanon. First and foremost, the mobility of Lebanon is quite a mess, traffic has always been a problem, especially for the Greater Beirut Area (GBA). In fact, studies in 2011 show that the capital struggles with severe traffic conditions. The Greater Beirut Area encloses more than 40% of the population.* More importantly, these vehicles release a vast amount of CO2, taking us away from the carbon neutrality goal. It is evident that fuel-based vehicles' impacts on the environment increased as 10 years passed by. Meanwhile, Lebanese are currently suffering from daily power cuts, and an increase in prices for fuel. Besides, the country is still facing several crises, for instance the currency crisis where prices are increasing at an insane speed. Now that we understand the problem Lebanon is facing, we can discuss the solutions. To lower the CO2 emissions caused by fuel-based vehicles, we could ride bicycles; avoid private transport and lastly choose green cars. Fortunately, electrified cars are available in the Lebanese market.* Some of these products are: Citroën C3, Opel Ampera, Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius Plug-In. All of the above products are ICE cars, ICE as in Internal Combustion Engine. However, the country still relies on fuel-based engines, additionally, the society does not seem to start buying green cars. Why? Because it does not make sense to buy an electrified car if charging is not guaranteed by the government. Well, things changed and this year the country launched the first Palestinian-Lebanese electric car, which is made locally in the Mediterranean country. "Quds Rise" is not only the name of the car, the word "Quds" means Jerusalem in Arabic. The Palestinian businessman Jihad Mohammad, was born in Lebanon, he started his innovative project 4 years ago. It is strictly forbidden for the customers to remove Jerusalem's name. Yes, this is a Palestinian revolution! What's even more interesting, is its price, Quds car only costs 30,000$!!! Here's the car's description: 2 seatings for adults, forged aluminum wheels, battery powered by 50KWH Lithium Ion, driver display (touch screen), weight of 2452lbs/1100kg, powered by 160 hp RWD. The EV Electra company consisted of more than 300 employees is aiming to produce 10,000 cars later this year. Wow! Other than that, the multi-national company has designed new products, for instance the Quds Capital ES, the Quds nostrum (E. E), RISE and E-Cab. However, charging stations are not ready yet. Hence, CO2 emissions are expected to decrease when e-cars hit the market. On the flip side, green mobility comes with its disadvantages. After using the battery, that one is expected to be thrown away causing e-waste, and is not likely to be recycled. To avoid traffic when recharging cars, it will be necessary to implement as many charging stations as possible, considering that each car needs between 30mins to 24h to be ready to go. In short, the Palestinian-Lebanese businessman Jihad Mohammad made it possible to produce e-cars while revolting for the people of Al Quds. Moreover, green cars are cleaner than fuel-based engines, if treated correctly. Should we rethink e-mobility? If not, then how do we get rid of the billions of the soon useless fuel-based engines? Thanks for sharing the background information of how Lebanon's traffic problems are a mess, regarding the concentrated population of Greater Beirut Area (GBA). It seems like that area is going through a similar problem as Seoul in Korea. Because half the population is concentrated, traffic jam and air quality is always a problem here. That is why the presence of electric cars must be a happy news.

Quds look adorable with its two seatings haha. You mentioned that when battery is done with its lifetime it becomes an e-waste but nowadays there are many studies exploring recycling of car batteries in Energy Storage Systems (ESS). If you're interested look into it :)
