Mangroves For Life

by HASSAN ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD | 05-09-2021 16:14 recommendations 0

In recent years, scientist have warned against the continous disappearance of mangrove forests worldwide.
The decline is reported at about 2% per year with a total loss of around 35% disappearing in the last twenty years.
Nigeria's mangrove are amongst the worst degraded globally, but solutions are starting to take root at a national level.
Nigeria has the largest reserve of water-friendly (mangroves, to be specific) trees in Africa. Mangroves are important solutions to the climate change crisis. They store carbon four times more than traditional rainforests, serve as shoreline protection against floods and storms, prevent erosion, and maintain water quality and clarity.
In addition, mangrove habitat are a true nursery for many species of fish and a home for birds, reptiles, crustaceans and other invertebrates.

    Hello Hassan,
    this is your mentor Joon.

Interesting article that shows mangroves can be a solution to climate change. I believe that is the exact reason why we should keep the colony of different species, and try to protect it against different threats. Rainforests can be a perfect example for this. Trees in rainforests are essential for controlling moistures level of earth and traps the carbon on the soil so it does not escape. If we let these trees to decrease, we would face serious climate change and it would be a threat to whole mankind. That is why we should find the balance between development and conservation.

    Thank you for your article.

Your article on mangroves are great! I??m curious how you got to write about this specific topic.
I??v heard of mangroves only once or twice before, but I didn??t know the details, such that it serves great works on preventing climate change. What is the reason for mangrove degradation in Nigeria? Also, is there solutions for preventing mangrove degradation that you can think of?
Loved the quote you wrote said by Einstein, and please keep up with your great articles!
