Theme: Eco-Friendly Waste Management

Title: ECOFRIENDLY WASTE MANAGEMENT

Waste is defined as material that has reached the end of its useful life and is disposed of in landfills. Garbage or waste is something that is undesired or useless. There is no such thing as waste in the world, according to science. If solid waste is transformed or processed in a scientific manner, almost every component has some potential. Thousands of years ago, people dug holes in the sands manually to bury their faecal matter and waste products, which served to limit the spread of disease in humans by rodents, rats, and other animals. One of the ecofriendly management of waste is incineration. Incineration merely entails the combustion of garbage. Incineration chambers come in a variety of sizes, from tiny for residential usage to huge for municipal use. It works well for treating contaminated waste (such as that from hospitals) and hazardous waste from manufacturers, but it creates too much carbon dioxide. In comparison to a domestic fireplace, modern cremation procedures are more efficient and produce less dioxin. This procedure is successful, but it is also costly.

The amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), which is the residue from normal human everyday activities generated from residential regions and business sectors, is constantly increasing due to the exponential expansion in the world population and the development in living standards. MSW pollution has a negative impact on the environment, especially in developing or low-income nations where government budgets are limited. In developing nations, two key issues continue to pose a challenge for MSW management: MSW characteristics and MSW management regulations. In comparison to MSW produced in industrialized nations, which comprises less than 20-30% -wt. of organic waste, MSW produced in poor countries has more than 60% -wt. of organic waste.

Hazardous waste is produced by a wide range of industrial and commercial activities. Ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, and toxicity are the qualities that constitute the hazardous waste category. Recycling sharps and sharps containers is becoming more popular in the United States, and it is a fantastic way to reduce the quantity of biohazards that are destroyed.  There are technologies that allow the actual sharps waste to be recycled and reused as new materials. These recycling initiatives cut biohazard waste significantly and can save laboratories thousands of dollars in waste disposal costs each year.

Some of the Ecofriendly way of waste management can be highlighted as:

(I) Reuse- resources can be reused to keep waste to a minimum.

(II) Composting- kitchen wastes, such as vegetable and fruit peels, can be decomposed in the yard or in a small pit.

(III) The use of solid waste to generate energy for the production of gas or electricity. The garbage is heated to an extremely high temperature here. Pyrolysis is the name for this process.

(IV) In the secure landfilling approach, plastic and clay liners are replaced in landfills prior to garbage being dropped, preventing waste leaching.
