Eco-friendly Waste Management

by Prince Foley | 18-10-2021 20:38 recommendations 1

Biogas is an energy-rich gas produced by anaerobic decomposition of biomass. Biogas is composed mostly of methane (CH4), the same compound in natural gas, and carbon dioxide (CO2). The methane content of raw (untreated) biogas may vary from 40%–60%, with CO2 making up most of the remainder along with small amounts of water vapor and other gases. Biogas can be burned directly as a fuel or treated to remove the CO2 and other gases for use just like natural gas. Treated biogas may be called renewable natural gas or biomethane.

Anaerobic decomposition of biomass occurs when anaerobic bacteria, those that live without the presence of oxygen eat and break down, or digest, biomass and produce biogas. Biogas forms in and can be collected from municipal solid waste landfills and livestock manure holding ponds. Biogas can also be produced under controlled conditions in special tanks called anaerobic digesters (biodigester). The material remaining after anaerobic digestion is complete is called digestate, which is rich in nutrients and can be used as fertilizer (biofertilizer).

Uses of Biogas
  • It is commonly used for cooking.
  • It can be used for the production of electricity.
  • It can be used in instruments used for water heating, space (room) heating etc.
  • It can replace compressed natural gas for use in vehicles.
  • The byproduct is used as manure.
  • It is used in many for lighting purposes.

Advantages of Biogas
  • Biogas don¡¯t pollute the environment. Thus, it is a clean source of energy..
  • It is renewable source of energy.
  • It reduces soil, water and air pollution.
  • It produces organic manure as byproduct.
  • As it is a low-cost method to produce energy, so it is economically friendly as well.
  • It is a healthy cooking alternative specially for developing countries.

Let us protect our environment by turning wastes into something productive. We can achieve eco-friendly waste management by ensuring that there is wise use of resources.

Hello Prince, this is your mentor Hannah. Sorry for the late comment!

Yes, biogas is attracting attention as time goes, I wonder when it will be more commercialized!
I guess the biggest advantage of it is the reduce of carbon dioxide. Do you think biogas will get a large share of renewable energy in the future?

Thank you for your great article and please keep up with your wonderful work :) Happy new year!

    Sincerly,
    Hannah

Hello Prince, this is your mentor Joon!

Biogas is one of the most popular ways to deal with organic wastes.
Gas produced during the process of decomposition can be used as a fuel
to generate, directly incinerate, processed to make fertilizers and so on.
There are many different usages so different people are working hard to find
alternative ways to use them. Though it is not spread widely around the world,
at least in Korea, it is consistently being studied by research institutes.
Hope Biogas technology become more accessible to normal people, which means
it became efficient, so we can keep our planet safe.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
