Thematic Report (October): Eco Friendly Waste management

by Kushal Naharki | 24-10-2021 19:22 recommendations 0

Waste is known as an unwanted product but if we manage them wisely then it can be converted into a useful product i.e. organic manure. In recent years, people have become more conscious about the use and benefit of organic waste. Organic waste or green waste is organic material that include  plants and  animals based material and degradable carbon such as paper, cardboard and timber which may be broken down by other living organisms. They are biodegradable, reusable and recyclable. Organic waste is unwanted but it can be made wanted. It can become a nutritive manure if managed properly. Addition of processed organic manure in the soil helps to maintain the health of soil and human health. Organic waste becomes the main unit of organic farming and helps to replace the use of expensive and timely unavailable chemical fertilizers to some extent. Use of organic waste also helps to maintain a clean and beautiful environment.

They collect waste and use it after it is processed.

Eco friendly management of organic waste such as crop residues, dung and urine from domesticated animals and wastages from slaughter  house, human excreta  and sewage, biomass of weeds, sugarcane trash, oilcakes, press mud and fly ash from thermal power plants , organic wastes from fruit and vegetables production and household wastes by recycling, helps in utilization of such organic wastes.  It has diversified use, as it is not only environment friendly but also increases the fertility and productivity of soil. Proper utilization of organic waste is the key factor for organic farming and sustainable agriculture.

Land application of organic waste material is a desirable disposal alternative. Not only are costs usually lower relative to other disposal methods but the waste material is beneficial for the soil and crop production. Organic materials contain nutrients needed for crop growth and also improve soil tilt, increase water holding capacity, lessen wind and water erosion, improve aeration and promote soil biological activity and chemical properties( Cation exchange capacity).Organic wastes are applied on the soil by composting , green manuring ,FYM, vermicompost. Utilization of organic wastes leads to a healthy and clean environment. It should be utilized properly, if not it can have adverse effects on human health and environment.

Benefits of organic waste utilization in the Environment

¡¤      Water and soil conservation and also protect ground water quality.

¡¤      Minimize odor from agricultural areas.

¡¤      Avoid methane production and leachate formation in landfills by diverting organics from landfills into  compost.

¡¤      Prevents erosion and turf loss on roadside s, hillsides, playing field and gulf courses.

¡¤      Reduce the use of  pesticides and fertilizers.

¡¤      Off-farm material can be brought in and added to manure to make compost.

¡¤      Facilitates reforestation, wetlands restoration, and wildlife habitat revitalization efforts by amending contaminated, compacted and marginal soils.

Benefits of organic waste utilization in the Agriculture

¡¤      Long term stable organic matter source.

¡¤      Add organic matter, humus and cation exchange capacity to regenerate poor soils and buffer soil pH levels.

¡¤      Suppress certain plant diseases and parasites and kill s weed seeds.

¡¤      Increase soil nutrient content and water holding capacity  of sandy soils and water infiltration of clay soils.

¡¤      Increase earthworm population in soils and re-store sol structure

¡¤      Brings higher prices for organically grown crops and provides opportunity for extra income

Hello Kushal, this is your mentor Hannah!
    Sorry for the late comment.
Interesting article on organic waste management.
I got it how organic wastes are useful and beneficial to agriculture, environment, and etc.
What would the improvement points of organic waste management be?
Thank you for the great ambassador report and please keep up with your great work ;)

    Yours, Hannah

Hello Kushal, this is your mentor Joon.

There are different ways to process wastes, and organic wastes are quite easy to
approach as they could be decomposed in short period of time, and produce different
residues, such as natural fertilizers and gases, which could be used in different fields.
Agriculture could be one, and environment could be another. People are looking for
different ways to utilize it, yet not much of these systems are implemented yet.
Hope more of these are applied in real life so we could give positive impact towards environment.

    Well read your article,

    Best,

    Joon
