Thematic Report- Air Pollution

by Sagar Koirala | 15-12-2021 19:36 recommendations 0

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and is an important source of morbidity and mortality.

It kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year. WHO data shows that almost all of the global population (99%) breathe air that exceeds WHO guideline limits containing high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries suffering from the highest exposures. WHO is supporting countries to address air pollution. Some air pollutants are poisonous. Inhaling them can increase the chance you'll have health problems. People with heart or lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from air pollution. Air pollution isn't just outside - the air inside buildings can also be polluted and affect your health.

Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's also called smog. The air quality of Nepal is very poor. Air Quality Index of my hometown Itahari is 139 US AQI. Air quality of major cities are deteriorating day by day.

Hello Sagar, this is your mentor Joon.

Air pollution is a serious problem which negatively affects our lives. There are different consequences of it which we could not and should not pass through. What should we do about it? What can we do about it? It is a time for serious consideration. Back then, air pollution was a problem of specific region, so did not get much attention. Now, it is problem of everywhere. Though situation got worse, I personally see this as a great chance as people now have raised awareness. But I don't want anymore spread. I just want people to come up with positive solution. What do you think is a remedy to solve this situation?

Well read your article, and let's keep up.

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Sagar, this is your mentor Hannah.

Thank you for the overall introduction of air pollution.
Yes, there are various air pollutants these days and so many people are suffering because of air pollution. Even today in Korea, microdust concentration was so high that just breathing outside for 5 minutes made my throat hurt.
I wonder how Nepal plans to improve the air quality.
Thank you for your great article and please keep up with your wonderful work :)

    Sincerly,
    Hannah
