[Free topic] Calendar of Environmental events

by Seyi Jang | 05-01-2022 21:17 recommendations 0

Late happy new year!! Time went so fast for 2021, I can¡¯t believe it¡¯s already 2022. I remember myself buying a fancy diary every new year and write down all events that will take place in the year to come. This year, I decided to add few more events to my diary as my goal of this year is to make my life more sustainable. I would like to introduce some environmental events for the following months that I have written down in my diary.

January - Veganuary
First time hearing about Veganuary? As you can notice in the term, Veganuary is an annual campaign that promotes and educates veganism and vegan lifestyle. Run by a UK nonprofit organization, ¡®Veganuary¡¯, the event had only 12,800 sign-ups when it first opened up in 2015. Now, 513,663 people have signed up for the event in 2021. It is important to say that livestock emit 64% of total ammonia emission, which is the main contributor of acid rain and acidification to the nature. In order to reduce consuming animals, people learn and share about living as a vegan during the whole January.

February - International Polar Bear day (27, February)
In all environment related projects or commercials, the phrase ¡®save the polar bears¡¯ is always written to emphasize the danger of climate change. That¡¯s because polar bears are the most vulnerable ones when climate change strikes and the arctic melts. In order to hold awareness of the extinction of polar bears, 27th of February was chosen as the international polar bear day.

March - International days of forest (21, March)
International day of forest was proclaimed by the UN in 2012 to point out the importance of the forest¡¯s role in the environment. Forest, filled with trees reduce the carbon dioxide significantly, more than sophisticated technology, as part of a circulation of nature. Highlighting the importance of forest, this day encourages the governments and people to preserve local forest and trees. The theme of 2022 is ¡°Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption¡±.
- Earth hour
8:30 to 9:30 pm on the last Saturday of March, the city is dark. All households turn off their light, as well as many shops and restaurants. The light of Namsan tower, the highlight of Seoul, which is turned on 24/7 is turned off just for this hour. We call this Earth hour, a worldwide movement to encourage people to turn off non-essential light. Started as a small light-off event in Sydney, Australia, now it is one of the most well known environment related event in the world.

These are the main events that happen in the first quarter of the year. I hope everybody can remember those days and the meaning behind it so that we can all participate and celebrate the day.

Hello Seyi, this is your mentor Joon.

There are many different days set to promote and raise awareness of certain actions. Guess calendar for environmental actions is a part of it. I recognize the Earth hour among the days you have mentioned. It is well-promoted around the world, as I have heard about earth hour in many different countries I have stayed, except for South Sudan. Small actions can make huge difference all together. What is your favorite environmental event? Have you ever participated in one? It would be a nice theme for free article showing how it is done.

Well read your article, and let's keep up.

    Best,

    Joon
