Awareness on Food Poisoning

by Sonika Pariyar | 11-03-2022 11:56 recommendations 1

Food poisoning (foodborne illness) is caused by infectious bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances entering the body through contaminated food or water. According to WHO, unsafe food containing bacteria, viruses, parasites substances is caused more than 200 diseases from diarrhea to cancer. An average of 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated food and 420000 die every year, resulting in the loss of 33 million healthy life years (DALYs). Children are more prone to food poisoning. Children under 5 years carry more than 40% of foodborne illnesses resulting in 12500 deaths every year.

With the objective to aware children, I raised the awareness program in Lotus English School located at Khairahani -6, Chitwan, Nepal on 20th of February. Almost 50 students of standards 4 and 5 participated in the awareness program. Children were not aware of food poisoning before, but I give them basic knowledge about food poisoning, its causative agents, sources of contamination, habits that should be adopted to cope with it.  There were so interactive and happy to get new topic .It was quite a great experience to be around children and give them some knowledge.

Thank you!!

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Joon.

Food poisoning is a serious problem which could lead to deaths for young children due to dehydration if not properly handled. One could prevent such incident simply by washing hands, preparing meal with hygienic condition, and by heating the food to sufficient temperature. As children are not the one who prepares for food, the best way to teach them is telling them how to wash their hands before eating food. I would like to praise you for your brave action!

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Wow! I was so surprised reading your article. Because I made a presentation about food poisoning in front of my classmates when it was in my middle school days! Food poisoning is hard to pre-empt or avoid when the food does not discolor nor smell bad. In this regard, your work must have been helpful to young children! And I think your efforts to share some knowledge must have inspired them!

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon
