[Free Theme-March] Tap Water Safety in the World |
---|

The purity of tap water is based on two things: the source it originates from and the level of filtration it goes through before it gets to our taps. Some countries like Switzerland receive plenty of rain and have melt from its glaciers to have one of the cleanest tap waters in the world. Other countries like Singapore uses a network of reservoirs and state-of-the-art filtration processes to achieve high level of clean drinking water. It is not a surprise to say that tap water is safest in the developed world, such as UK, Canada, U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Northern and Western Europe, and Japan. On the other hand, in some countries in Central America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East are considered unsuitable for visitors to drink tap water. This doesn¡¯t mean their tap water is dirty but unsuitable for visitors because the pathogens in the water are foreign to their immune systems. So, when you¡¯re travelling, be sure to check where you can and cannot drink tap water. As for Korea, it is safe for people to drink tap water. The water infrastructure across the country is reliable and purification processes are well maintained. According to ¡®Water and Sanitation Report¡¯ by EPI(Environmental Performance Index), South Korea is ranked 20th in the world, 2nd in Asia after Japan. Also, Seoul¡¯s tap water ¡°Arisu¡± obtained the ISO 22000 certification on food safety management systems. When you¡¯re travelling in Seoul, you¡¯ll generally find water purifying machines in public buildings like museums, restaurants, and government buildings. It is smart to bring a water bottle and fill up your bottle with either tap water or water from the purifying machine.

Hello Seoyoon, this is your mentor Joon.
Drinking adequate dose of tap water could help people to supply chemical substances required for metabolism. As a citizen living in Seoul, I constantly had access to Seoul's 'Arisu'. I did not have any problem, by far, after drinking it even before the city government replaced the old and rusted pipelines. However there are still beliefs that tap water is dirty and not safe for drinking. It might be true for other regions of South Korea, but as long as 'Arisu' is provided, it can be guaranteed that it is safe from processing facility to buildings.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon

Carrying water bottle is a very innovative idea, in that case we get to avoid pollution by reusing the same bottle for drinking. I heard on radio that there was a water poisoning in one of the Asian countries a few years ago, countries must adopt best safe ways of purifying water for mass usage. Thanks for such a nice report.
Green Cheers from Ghana!

Hello Seoyoon, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
Even though I have heard that we have to be careful drinking tap water abroad, it??s my first time to learning why. I remember I visited the water purification plant of Arisu Center when I was in my elementary school days. I could not believe how huge the plant was. Though I did not understand the process of purification at that time, now that I am taking a ¡®Water and Sewage Plant Engineering?? course at my univ, I think I could explain the process of it to ambassadors after this semester!
There was no problem drinking tap water ¡°Arisu¡± back in the days. But these days, machines of Arisu are not available in public areas or buildings due to the COVID-19.
I hope we can overcome this pandemic soon so that many foreigners can visit Korea and enjoy Arisu.
Thank you for the article!
Regards,
Chelwoon
