Monthly Thematic Report- Water Pollution

by Sagar Koirala | 22-03-2022 11:36 recommendations 0

Water is one of the most important natural resources that is essential to sustain every form of life on this earth. Water made life possible on the earth. In-spite of the fact it is being polluted day by day. In present context, Water pollution is one of the irritating issue flourishing day by day across the globe. In simple words, water pollution refers to the release of unwanted substances into different sources of water such as groundwater or into lakes, streams, riversestuaries, and oceans to the point where the substances interfere with beneficial use of the water or with the natural functioning of ecosystems.

Human beings are the main reason for the contamination of water.  Contributions to water pollution include  chemical fertilizers and pesticides, runoff from septic tanks, outflow from livestock feedlots, chemical wastes (some toxic) from industries, substances drawn from the air (see acid rain), silt from soil erosion, and sewage and other urban wastes from cities and towns. Water pollution alters both environment and human health directly as it can contributes in  biodiversity losses and can also cause various diseases in humans. Along with this water pollution also causes disturbances in aquatic habitats of aquatic creatures.

Currently, about 40 percent of the world¡¯s population is facing water scarcity and 1.7 billion are living in river basins where water usage exceeds renewal. Without immediate action, it is estimated that by 2025 half of the world¡¯s population will be experiencing a water shortage, and by 2050 one in four people will be living in a country with an insufficient fresh water supply. Considering these facts and estimation, we must focus on controlling  water pollution. Water pollution can be controlled by throwing wastes and sewage at proper places, by avoiding use of any forms of chemicals substances near water resources, by using Eco friendly products, by planting trees near w.sources, etc. As being the most civilized creature of planet we humans must be responsible for our doings and act accordingly.

Water Pollution is a big problem here in Nepal. People throw wastes, non-degradable materials especially in various water sources. Bagmati river, which is in the bank of Kathmandu City is one of the most polluted river of Nepal. Despite cleanliness campaign organized at regular interval, we are unsuccessful in changing people's perception towards Water Pollution.

Hello Sagar, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

This article shows that you have a clear understanding of water pollution. There are various causes and effects of water pollution. As you have mentioned, almost half of the people in the world are facing water scarcity due to unbalanced distribution and global level-water pollution. I read about the water pollution of the Bagmati River in another ambassador??s article. Hopefully, your country will find the proper solution of the pollution of the Bagmati river before it is too late.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Sagar, this is your mentor Joon.

Even though humans are now facing water scarcity, and, according to your article, half of the world's population will be experiencing water shortage by 2025, people are not well aware of its seriousness. Most people are not interested to environmental problems, and even if they do, they are less interested to water pollutions. More people should be aware for current situation and take some action. Even though I believe individual action counts more than big single time campaign, I believe it is time for such campaigns to raise significant awareness.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
