Pollution in water

‌Pollution in water

In order to begin to clarify this, we must know what pollution is. This term refers to the introduction of any agent—chemical, physical, or biological—whose presence or accumulation has harmful effects on the natural environment, health, and well-being of people.

When researching water pollution, there is something called the purification cycle of water bodies, which is a natural process of purifying pollutants from water bodies. However, when the concentration or quantity exceeds certain levels, the self-purification capacity is not sufficient.

According to the World Health Organization, "two million tons of sewage together with industrial waste are discharged daily into water bodies; in fact, it is estimated that 1,500 km3 of sewage is currently produced, a volume six times greater than the total volume of the planet's rivers." [1]

When a dam is polluted, it is when the pollutants have a negative impact on human consumption and the subsequent use of ecosystems. In fact, 375 people died in 2015 as a result of intestinal infection diseases.

How can we help with this in the Latin American region? Specifically, we have to invest in infrastructure to increase the quality of wastewater treatment. That, over time, specifically in the long term, decreases the risks of contamination.

Hello Daniel, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

As you have mentioned, water bodies have their own self-purification system. However, the certain level of the concentration of the pollutants to keep that function is much lower than most people expect. We should not depend on their self-purification when it comes to maintaining the quality of water.
I think wastewater treatment infrastructures are the most important factor and what we have to invest in. Some movements are currently being made to invest in them, but it is still insufficient.

    Thank you for the article!

    Chelwoon

Hello Daniel, this is your mentor Joon.

Indeed there exists some natural cycle which purifies water. However, pollution in modern days cannot be dealt only with such natural measures as too much pollutants are released to fresh water stream. I do not understand why people are dumping chemicals and wastes even though it would eventually end up on table in the jar of water. Not many restrictions are being implemented in several countries, and people are supplied with poor quality water full of pollutants. This issue should be addressed.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
