[Free Report] Water Crisis in Uzbekistan and C5+1 Youth Council "Water Crisis"

by Sara Dauletyarova | 18-04-2022 23:17 recommendations 0

According to the World Resources Institute, Uzbekistan was ranked 25th out of 164 in the world¡¯s water-stressed countries. The water crisis has been considered a serious issue in Uzbekistan, particularly in regions like Karakalpakstan. In most remote regions of the country, it has been quite difficult to find water for agriculture activities and for household use. Hydropower accounts for only 4.92% of the entire country. The mean value of total water resources is estimated at 50-60 km3 per year, with only 12.2 km3 forming inside the republic and the rest of the water cycles from the Tien Shan and Pamir-Altai mountains. Most of the water sources are used for cotton plants.
The population of the country is estimated to rise to nearly 40 million people, with a reduction of the water availability resources by 7-8 km3. The Aral Sea issue is concerned not only by Uzbekistan but also neighboring countries. More than 135-145 million tons of salt go into the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya every year.

C5+1 Youth Council held a conference named ¡°Water Crisis and Climate Change in Central Asia (CA) and Afghanistan¡± in Kyrgyzstan, April 8-10,2022. The primary purpose of this fully-funded conference was to promote awareness of Water Crisis and Climate Change issues among high school and university students from CA and Afghanistan. There were discussions on solutions as a Model UN format with environmental researchers and experts of CA. The participants discussed project ideas to promote negotiations, conflict resolution, and approaches to solve water issues. The C5+1 Youth Council selected the best ideas and they're awarded a micro-grant.

Hello Sara, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

My country, Korea is ranked 53th out of 150 countries at high risk of a water crisis. However, I think Koreans fail to recognize this crisis although the data tells us otherwise. Honestly, I do not recognize either. However, I have always tried to save water, and some people have as well. How can we make more people willing to participate in this kind of movement? If solutions for encouraging people, in countries where people do not actually feel this crisis to participate in such a movement, are discussed, the conference will be more helpful in it??s original goal.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Based on numerous articles of our ambassadors, I am quite familiar with the issue regarding Aral sea. Water is drying up and hard to be recovered, even though there are different approaches being made. There were articles mentioning possible solutions to the problem, and it should be discussed. Conferences could and should be the field that such problems are discussed. Hope proper remedy in introduced as soon as possible.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

    Hey Sara,

I have read a few articles about the shrinkage of the Aral Sea. Indeed it has impacted many people. It is really saddening seeing things work this way. But hey, we youngsters are going to be the face of this earth and surely will actively build solutions to these problems.

Not just Uzbekistan but many other countries are also facing water crisis. It is great to hear that these kinds of conferences are being arranged and the problems are being recognised.

    Hoping for the best,
    Risav.
