SOIL POLLUTION Soil pollution as a part of Land degradation is caused by the presence of xenobiotic chemicals .It is typically caused industrial activity, agricultural chemicals or improper disposal of waste. Due to microplastic ,oil spills, mining acid rain, intensive forming, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, industrial accidents, road debris. Natural pollution: natural process can lead to an accumulation of toxic chemicals in the soil. Ex: accumulation of higher levels of perchlorate in soil from the ATACAMA DESERT in CHILE. Industrial waste: steel, pesticides, textiles, drugs, glass, cement, petroleum etc. waste produced by paper Mills, oil refineries, sugar factories, petroleum industries. Discharge of sewage, landfill and illegal dumping, coal ash, electronic waste. Vehicle exhaust -like cd, zn, pb. The most common chemicals involved are petroleum hydrocarbons, solvents, pesticides, lead and other heavy metals.
Effects of soil pollution: soil pollution affects plants, animals and human. Diseases caused by soil pollution: Humans can be affected by soil pollution through the inhalation of gasses emitted from soil moving upward or wind. It causes headaches, nausea, fatigue, skin rashes, eye irritation, more serious conditions like neuromuscular blockage, kidney, liver damage and various forms of cancer.
Soil pollution be controlled: soil pollution be controlled by bioremediation, micro remediation, thermo remediation, plastic bags ban etc.

Hello Rushitha, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

I think you enumerated three causes of soil pollution in order of the degree of impact. Of course, in some areas, agricultural chemicals can cause more adverse effects than others. How can we alleviate the impacts of the industrial activities? Although we cannot eliminate them directly, there are many ways to do so indirectly. For example, we can raise awareness about the impacts on lands from industrial activities. I think we must continue to participate in this type of movement to achieve our goal, and you are doing so!

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,

Hello Rushitha, this is your mentor Joon.

There are different causes to soil pollution, but in most of the times, except for the special cases such as Atacama desert, it is mostly done due to human activities. Industrial wastes takes up the huge portion of it, and inadequate process of waste takes another big part. Once the pollution accumulates, and time passes, it would eventually return to us and therefore, we should take actions now. Yet, there are not many ways we could use for remedy, so the best way is to reduce the disposal of waste in first place.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
