Do you know about Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen?

by Sonika Pariyar | 31-05-2022 00:35 recommendations 0

We bring many fruits and vegetables from the market to satisfy our daily nutrition needs. While bringing it from the market, do you ever think about its pesticide management method and the pesticide residue it contains?  Which fruits and vegetables are more power to retain pesticides for a longer period of time? Today I am going to share with you about Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to public education on topics such as agricultural methods, natural resource protection, and the effects of chemicals on human health. Since 1995, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has published the Dirty Dozen, a list of conventionally cultivated fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide residue levels. While the Environmental Working Group maintains that this list can assist customers to avoid unnecessary pesticide exposure, some experts, including food scientists, argue that the list is scaring people away from eating nutritious foods. Pesticides are strictly monitored by the USDA, and recent statistics show that pesticide levels in 99.5 percent of standard products are substantially below EPA limits. The EWG produced the Dirty Dozen list as a resource for people who wish to keep their pesticide exposure to a bare minimum for themselves and their families. The Dirty Dozen is a list of fruits and vegetables with the highest level of pesticide residues formed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to aware the public on food safety. The list of Dirty dozen is listed below:

                  I.            Strawberries

              II.            Spinach

           III.            Nectarines

          IV.            Apple

              V.            Peaches

          VI.            Grapes

       VII.            Cherries

   VIII.            Pears

          IX.            Tomatoes

              X.            Celery

          XI.            Potatoes

       XII.            Sweet Bell Peppers

In contrast to Dirty Dozen, there are fruits and vegetables under the category clean fifteen which indicates the top fifteen conventional fruits and vegetables with the least amount of pesticide residues. The list of Clean Fifteen is listed below:

  1.       I.            Avocados
  2.   II.            Sweet Corn
  3. III.            Pineapple
  4. IV.            Cabbage
  5.   V.            Sweet Peas
  6. VI.            Onions
  7. VII.            Asparagus
  8. VIII.            Mangos
  9. IX.            Papaya
  10.   X.            Kiwi
  11. XI.            Eggplant
  12. XII.            Honeydew Melon
  13. XIII.            Grapefruit
  14. XIV.            Cauliflower
  15. XV.            Cantaloupe

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Thank you for introducing an amazing non-profit organization for the environment! Among the lists of fruits and vegetables with the highest level of pesticide residues, one kind of vegetable is spinach – a vegetable my grandfather has cultivated so far. He has also tried to reduce using pesticide, but he said ¡°it is not that easy.¡± However, that pesticide not only affect your health, but also hurts the soil when growing plants and vegetables. We need to replace them with alternative eco-friendly methods, which is beneficial to the Earth and everyone??s health.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Joon.

It is quite interesting to see that there are different classifications on such vegetables based on the residue of pesticides. I have heard from the media that it is unhealthy to consume vegetables directly, so we need to wash it beforehand, but did not actually had some time to think about which are the most harmful vegetables. We should take more care when consuming the listed vegetables knowing that there are much more residues compared to others. I would also like to hear your opinions regarding the topics on next articles!

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
