Mexican Wolf [Thematic report]

Mexican Wolf

"Canis lupus bailey" is the scientific name of the Mexican wolf. This animal is characteristic of northern Mexico and the southern United States. But you know the sad history of this beautiful and emblematic animal.

This species was extinct. In fact, in 1987, the Mexican wolf was declared extinct from the wild. Efforts were made to conserve this lineage some time later. Currently, thanks to these efforts, there are less than 60 wolves, although they are still stalking farmers. They are no longer in existence. Thanks to these efforts, they are in "danger of extinction".

Reasons why it was in existence, mainly because the instinct of this wolf is to hunt. Sadly, several ranchers killed these wolves. Why did they do it? They did it because the wolves eat their cows. Also, wolves have a bad reputation, and most people believe that they are dangerous. Knowing more about this, I understood that 80 percent of this recovery depends on the people. That is to say, the decision is up to us.

Among the benefits of the return of this magnificent species is the control of populations of other species, thus maintaining the proper functioning of ecosystems.

An example that I found and that they mention is that "if one of these pieces is missing, certain populations will skyrocket. For example, the deer increase and with this the vegetation they feed on decreases considerably, causing cascading effects throughout the ecosystem "(UNAM Seeks to Save the Mexican Wolf from Extinction | UNAM Global, 2021).

The change is in us.

Hello Daniel, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

"If one of these pieces is missing, certain populations will skyrocket¡° indicates all about the danger of decline in biodiversity. When we try to understand problem mentioned in this article, we need to consider the reason why the wolves crawl out and eat the cows. I think It is possible that the wolves have struggled with the lack of food which had been easily found in their habitat in the past. I do not know what triggered the change in their habits, but I think that there must have been something to explain this situation.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Daniel, this is your mentor Joon.

Humans always become arrogant and try to decided which species is necessary in earth and which is not. We always need to keep in our mind that we do not understand the principle of ecosystem at all. The most adequate example similar to this one is about wolves in Yosemite. The farmers killed wolves with the same reasoning, but then, they could not control the head counts of others, the prey species for wolf, and lead to further damage. We need to know how to become less arrogant.

Well read your article and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
