Biodiversity

Biodiversity is easily one of the biggest things threatened by pollution. This report will discuss how biodiversity in water sources are threatened by pollution.

One result of pollution is an increase of carbon in the atmosphere. This carbon can then be absorbed into the ocean at a greater rate than normal. An increase of carbon in the ocean can result in many effects, such as rising temperatures and ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification reduces the availability of carbonate ions in the water, as increased carbon forms into bicarbonate instead. Species that build shells and skeletons out of carbonate such as clams and coral can have defective shells as a result of this. This causes less and less of their offspring to survive, which can be incredibly detrimental to biodiversity.

The second threat to biodiversity is rising temperatures, which not only causes less species to be able to live in certain areas, but can also cause coral to "bleach", which means that they expel their algae. This can cause  the coral to die if this algae isn't recovered. Rising temperatures also causes species to migrate and change their pattern, this inconsistency can be very detrimental to species that rely on certain patterns. Some species may even completely die out from even slight increases in temperature, which is obviously very harmful to biodiversity.

Hello Harrison, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Carbon emissions has caused many types of environmental problems so far. Two of them are ocean acidification and global warming. Many policies and measures are being made to reduce carbon emissions, but our efforts are still inadequate. We have to set up more adequate plans to alleviate issues and also need to take action immediately. While governments and researchers make an effort to make better policies and better technologies, we also have to change our habits in a way that helps the environment and makes an effort to raise awareness.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Harrison, this is your mentor Joon.

There are different features causing threats to biodiversity. Can we identify all of the threats? I do not think so. We should not become arrogant saying we understand the fundamental structure. Such behavior does not help us solve the problems at all. Do we know how we can solve acidification and global warming problems? I do not think so. That is why we should be more modest and try our best to save the environment and keep it as it is. Please include more of your opinions and cite the sources!

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
