My views towards Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

by Sonika Pariyar | 14-06-2022 11:43 recommendations 0

Last month I had shared a report on a list of the fruits belonging to dirty dozen and clean fifteen. Today I am sharing my views on it.

We consume different fruits each day, some of them may be listed in Clean fifteen while other may be listed in dirty dozen. We can¡¯t avoid consuming these fruits just because they are listed in the dirty dozen list. Suppose, my favorite fruit is Strawberry I can¡¯t avoid consuming it thinking it¡¯s one of the fruits under the category of dirty dozen. The best method to get rid of pesticide residue is the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and other products that are produced organically.

The organic method of production is one of the safe and eco-friendly methods of production. An organic method of crop production ensures the better health of plants as well as consumers. When you visit the market for buying any fruits and vegetables, we should make sure that are buying fruits and vegetables that are safely produced.

As we all are familiar with the fact that the world population is increasing day by day. Organic agriculture may be challenging for organic agriculture to feed this growing population day by day. If we are obliged to consume the fruits and vegetables that are produced inorganically, we must be familiar with the term Pre-harvest interval (PHI) or Waiting Periods. PHI is the time required to reduce the pesticide residues concentration below its prescribed MRL. The maximum residue limit (MRL) is the maximum concentration of a pesticide residue that is legally permitted in or on food commodities and animal feeds. The different pesticide has a different waiting period.  If the pesticides are applied to the food commodities, they should be available to the market only after the pesticides used have crossed the waiting period.

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

I remember your last article(report) about the connection between the use of pesticide and the fruits we usually enjoy. Of course, I prefer organic fruits. However, their price is much higher than usual fruits. In Korea, one small pack of organic strawberries costs around 15 dollars, while one pack of usual strawberries costs almost the half of it. I hope that more advanced technologies for organic agriculture are developed and they will help lower the cost of them.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hi Sonika, this is your mentor Joon.

I remember your article segregating different fruits as it was quite interesting approach. Before consuming fruits which used pesticides during the growth, it is important to note that which types of pesticides are used and how long it takes to clean the residues. There are some countries which tracks the pesticides used during the growing process and could easily be searched with internet. Also, it would be nice to refer to some popular methods such as cleaning the fruit on water mixed with vinegar.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
