Inspiring more teens for a more sustainable city

During her menstrual life (approx. 33 years) a woman spends thousands of dollars on feminine hygiene products. In addition, 408,000 tons of sanitary napkin waste is discarded worldwide, which takes 500 years to degrade. Consequently, affecting many ecosystems in terms of flora and fauna for present and future generations. Furthermore, local trade in Peru offers farmers the worst wages in the sector.

These 3 issues, particularly the environmental impact, are the main ones that my project seeks to address. Thus, Yura Warmi was born, a project that proposes the manufacture of feminine pads with a bioplastic based on banana peel, water, cornstarch and other biodegradable elements. It promotes a circular economy by having banana peels that would normally be discarded as its main component and seeks to fairly remunerate farmers.

Therefore, I went to some classrooms of the school where I was going to make talks about my project but at the same time how we children and young people can make sustainable projects in different areas for our country.

At the same time, letting them know that there are spaces where they can interact, create and inquire about sustainability, green ecosystems or alternative solutions like the Tunza Eco Generation platform.

The fact that I was able to transmit my project, receive questions about how I achieved it or what actions they themselves could do to contribute made me think that there are truly many young people and children agents of change with many creative ideas that need to be promoted and admired.

I loved this project! As an environment lover I cannot agree more on the fact that it is really important to educate today's teenagers regarding the damages that the current industries are creating as they are the face if the future! Thank you so much for the useful information!

Hello Nataly, this is your mentor Joon.

Interesting approach of your project! Making biodegradable hygiene products are absolutely necessary and it would definitely help the environment. The only problem is whether it can be produced massively. That, but not only, would be the key to success of your project. It is good to share awareness and to inspire young adults as the early educations help to form the common sense of a human. Once they form environmental friendly thoughts now, it would definitely help them to grow up as an adult with pro-environment.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
