Deforestation Deforestation is common and deadly. The world suffers from deforestation due to human activity. In South Korea, the average annual deforestation rate is about 0.11%. This may not seem so bad at first, but that is about 7100 hectares of forest lost each year. This is equivalent to around 17500 football fields! This is a great issue that we need to face. Deforestation is intentional clearing of forested land. In order to make space for construction, and materials for burning, humans are responsible for the destruction of trees and wildlife. There is one major consequence to this action. The increased emission of carbon dioxide. Obviously, the disappearance of trees is not increasing the amounts of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. That comes from the works of manufactures and productions. However, the destruction of trees contributes to the increase because trees take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. Meaning, with the lack of trees, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air will be more than usual. This creates an ultimate problem: global warming. Furthermore, deforestation also threatens biodiversity. Rainforests are home to many great animals and plant species that are threatened if their habitat is destroyed. When their homes and food are destroyed, some species may even go extinct. Today, we have talked about the dangers of deforestation. However, wood is an absolute material people need in their lives. Therefore, that brings up a question. Will humans refrain from too much deforestation? If so, will it even be any help towards the environment? https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/deforestation |

Hello Cheha, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
Well written article about deforestation! The amount of carbon dioxide being removed by trees every year makes us think about the importance of them. If one tree disappears, not only can we no longer remove the amount of carbon dioxide which would have been removed by one tree, but we are also losing the part of the ecosystem which the tree was a part of.. All entities are interconnected with each other. This is why we must not overlook even the smaller things
Thank you for the article!

Chelwoon

Hello Cheha, this is your mentor Joon.
Deforestation used to be a serious issue in Korea back then in 1960's up till 80's. The mountains were gray, unlike as it is now. As mentioned in the article, deforestation leads to serious side effects and we all know we would have dark future if we keep on cutting down the trees. Then, what are the actions of different countries? It could be divided into two: either to keep cutting down, or to cut down in sustainable way. The countries which falls onto the latter category actually developed quite interesting tactic. They made an artificial forest by planting trees little by little, year by year. Then, they wait until the first segment of the trees, which were planted on first year, to grow fully, cut down the trees, and re-plant them. Studies have shown the sustainability of such methods. The only downside to the tactic is that it requires huge amount of land, which cannot be done in Korea. We should find the way that fits to us.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon
