Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) :- Thematic Report For June 2022

by Bidhata Pathak | 01-07-2022 21:08 recommendations 0

Green building certification systems are a set of rating systems and tools that are used to assess a building or a construction project's performance from a sustainability and environmental perspective.[1]

According to the Global Status Report 2017 published by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in coordination with the International Energy Agency (IEA), buildings and construction activities together contribute to 36% of the global energy use and 39% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Through certification, the associated environmental impacts during the lifecycle of buildings and other infrastructures (typically design, construction, operation and maintenance) could be better understood and mitigated.[2]

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) :-

A green building certification program used worldwide is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Developed by the non-profit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods, which aims to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. By 2015, there were over 80,000 LEED-certified buildings and over 100,000 LEED-accredited professionals. Most LEED-certified buildings are located in major U.S. metropolises. LEED Canada has developed a separate rating system adapted to the Canadian climate and regulations.

LEED certification is granted by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), which arranges third-party verification of a project's compliance with the LEED requirements. The certification process for design teams consists of the design application, under the purview of the architect and the engineer and documented in the official construction drawings, and the construction application, under the purview of the building contractor and documented during the construction and commissioning of the building.

Hello Bidhata, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Thank you for introducing us to the most famous green building certification program! It is used not only in the United States, but also in many other countries to assess buildings and constructions in terms of the environment. However, there still exist many entry barriers for some companies, for instance, technology and finance. In order to realize ideal green certification programs, we need to support companies which cannot afford to pay attention green businesses.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Bidhata, this is your mentor Joon.

Green Building Certification programs seeks for buildings with reduced energy loss, increased energy efficiency, and percentage of renewable energies used. Different researches are made in order to increase the building efficiencies. For instance, the recent research combined the glass with solar panel so that the building could harvest energy on daylight. It boosts the effort of researching and therefore, leads to positive effects. Hope such programs continue.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
