Landslides in Nepal: A concern - Free report for June 2022

Located in the central of the Himalaya range, Nepal is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world due to its topography and climatic condition. Earthquakes, landslides, floods, fires, thunderbolts are the major causes of disaster events that caused major damage in the past, weakening the fragile ecosystem of the country. Economic Vulnerability Analysis shows that Nepal exhibits the largest losses due to large exposure at risk and the high level of hazards. As a matter of these phenomena not only cause loss of lives and properties, but also pose severe threats to physical infrastructure, and also disrupt economic development.

One of the most frequently occuring natural disasters in Nepal is:-

Landslide:
According to a report by the United Nations¡¯ Food and Agriculture Organization published in 2011, Nepal has one of the highest fatalities from landslides in the world. Landslides are not a new phenomenon in a country where more than 80% of land is on a slope – and many occur naturally. But experts say that increasing human activities, such as road building, have been making the situation worse.
Geologists say that many villages in the hills of Nepal are located on old landslides, but people tend to forget quickly. At first, people start to grow crops on landslide debris and then they construct houses. After a few years or decades this becomes a new settlement. Then this ignorance goes on to take their own lives.
The risk of landslides is further exacerbated by anthropogenic activities like improper land use, encroachment into vulnerable land slopes and unplanned development activities such as construction of roads and irrigation canals without proper protection measures in the vulnerable mountain belt.

Hello Bidhata, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

I remember the news about the destructive earthquake occurred in Nepal about 5 years ago. Hundreds or even thousands of people can be rendered homeless by an earthquake. Landslide is often accompanied by the earthquake. It is sad to hear that many people die every year due to landslides in your country. One of ways to prevent landslides is ¡°planting¡±. If we put it into action, we can not only prevent natural disasters, but also help to save the planet.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Bidhata, this is your mentor Joon.

Landslide is one of the deadliest disaster which could happen. Once it starts, it damages all the structures on the surface of soil. People and animals are trapped underground slowly leading to death due to loss of oxygen, and heavy pressures are put to the lungs in worst cases. Such landslides are mostly due to lack of supporting structures including the roots of tree. Once it contains excess amount of water, it no longer supports the weight and slides down due to gravity. Planting trees are easiest way to overcome with such situations.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
