[October Thematic Report] Introducing renewable energy in Madagascar

by Barisoa Nancy Andriamiarimbola | 06-10-2022 22:59 recommendations 1

According to the World Bank, Madagascar is currently the fifth country in Africa in which a Scaling Solar tender process was launched. In this article, we will find out Madagascar's involvement in solar energy and the incredible benefits of this practice on our environment. Who thought that the sun - the natural gift that we received from above - could save our planet and our health through the scaling solar ?

Solar energy is safe, sustainable, respects our environment.

Solar energy is an energy source that depends on the sun and used to produce electricity from photovoltaic panels or solar thermal power plants, thanks to the sunlight captured by solar panels.

It does not emit any polluting CO2. This innovation will then allow to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide which harms the environment by modifying the climate, by increasing the sea level and by intensifying the ecological damages. Furthermore, it also reduces water consumption as solar panels create energy without water or negative impact on the ecosystem. Last but not least, it is one of the ways we can try to prevent the effects of climate change. By reducing our CO2 emissions and putting less pollutants into the air, we can all do our part to slow climate change.

Scaling Solar in Madagascar and its benefits

The Scaling Solar initiative initiated by the World Bank aims to facilitate the implementation of privately funded solar energy projects in Africa. It offers an all-in-one service of advice, guarantees, financing and procurement to enable transparent, competitive and cost-effective provision of solar energy by governments. After Zambia and Senegal, Madagascar is the third African country to benefit from this initiative since its launch in January 2015 by the World Bank.

Before this initiative, Madagascar was often the victim of long daily load shedding. The country also had a very low electrification rate of 15% according to the World Bank. This backwardness hinders economic and social development so solar energy is the most affordable solution in the short term. Thanks to this practice, not only does the country contribute to the protection of our environment and the health of the people, but it also contributes to the development of the country.

The most wonderful thing is that it protects our environment and our health at a low cost knowing that sunlight is free, unlimited and easily accessible. As the sun is free, it allows us to make considerable savings. Whether you want to help make the world a greener place, or you just want to save money on your electricity bills, solar energy can help you. In my next article, I'll also introduce you to the wind energy in Madagascar so stay tuned !
