According to world bank data, in 2020 the world was estimated to generate 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste with a footprint of 0.79 kg per person per day whereas with rapid population growth and urbanization the annual waste generation is expected to increase by 73% from 2020 levels to 3.88 billion tonnes in 2050.This show the importance of Solid waste management in today¡¯s world. Solid waste management is one of the major challenging tasks in Urbanization. It is the process of collecting, treating, and disposing of solid wastes. Improper disposal of solid waste can cause pollution and invites different vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and many more.

Solid waste management should be done by each and every household. There is a different category of waste that is generated in small families to large industries. The categories of waste are organic waste, combustibles, non-combustibles, toxic waste, recyclables, ashes or dust, construction waste, dead animals, bulky waste, etc. The categories of waste vary from place to place. The different sources of waste are residential, Industrial, commercial, institutional, construction and demolition areas, municipal services, treatment plants and sites, agriculture, and biochemical.

There are different methods of Solid waste management. They are:

1.    Sanitary landfill

2.    Incineration

3.    Recovery and recycling

4.    Composting

5.    Pyrolysis

In Nepal, different waste management practices are followed such as waste being collected in different ways like door-to-door collection, collection through community bins, roadside pick- up and self-delivery. Waste is disposed of in Land filling and thermal treatments. Nowadays, the government has focused on the categorization of waste as bio-degradable and non-degradable. There is a routine for the collection of degradable and non -degradable waste in some parts of Nepal. If people do not follow the rule of the municipality regarding the disposal of solid waste, he /she have to pay a fine as per the rule. The dustbins are kept in each public place to dispose of the waste like dustbins for paper, dustbins for glass, and so on.
