Ocean Acidification around the world has become a huge issue. Ocean acidification occurs when carbon dioxide enters into the waters and causes the water to decrease in pH, and increase in acidity, making it hard to survive for animals especially coral reefs and other animals that have carbon skeletons. As the acidity drops, the animals' skeleton slowly dissolves and in the end dies.
According to Scientific American, ocean acidification is causing billions of damages to coral reefs and crabs in Alaska (Frank 2022). Not only are Alaskan coral reefs becoming threatened, but also Florida's coral reefs. Both of these reefs combined are estimated to be around 8. 5 billion dollars in value to the US (Franks 2022).

Furthermore, Ocean acidification poses a huge problem to workers that work in the fish industry. In Alaska, about fifty thousand jobs are created due to the seafood industry, and with ocean acidification, this number can become lower and lower as time goes (Frank 2022). Not only that, but it produces 2.2 billion dollars in sales for the government. The Florida sea industry produces 4.4 billion dollars in sales, and creates seventy thousand jobs (Frank 2022).

Now what would happen if ocean acidification became worse? What if the seafood industry shuts down due to it? The US's two most popular seafood regions will become without jobs, pay, and sales.  Not only that, the rest of the Nation will severly be affected as this would lead to overall decrease in seafood products all around the nation. As you can see, ocean acidification is no longer only a wildlife problem. It connects back to us humans.

Hello, this is your mentor Minkyung.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of ocean acidification. I didn't know that ocean acidification has become a huge issue worldwide. Thanks to your report, I could gain knowledge on what it is and how it affects the environment.

I'll be looking forward to your next report :)

    Hi, Jayden Kim!
    This is your mentor, Yoon.

Thank you for introducing the ocean acidification caused by carbon dioxide. As you dealt in the article, carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid when it dissolves in water.
I can see that the ocean acidification is a disaster for many ocean species.

Great job on writing the free report.
I am looking forward to reading your following report!
