(MARCH FREE REPORT) Poor Urban Planning and Climate Crisis in Cameroon

by Sandrine Yaah | 28-03-2023 18:54 recommendations 0

Urban planning which is the design and regulation of the uses of space that focus on the physical form, economic functions, and social impacts of the urban environment and on the location of different activities within it. Drawn upon engineering, architectural, and social and political concerns, it is variously a technical profession, an endeavour involving political will and public participation.  This is aimed at creating solutions that improve or requalify an existing urban area, as well as creating new urbanization in a given region. In this sense, urban planning should therefore solve problems arising from urbanization such as pollution, traffic jam, urban voids, problems arising from climate change, etc.
With the coming of the raining season in Cameroon, the question of how good is the urban planning scheme within the national territory has once more being on everyone's lips. Reasons being that, the recent rainfall with an unexpected intensity, has  resulted to flooding in some major cities across the country such Yaoundé, Bamenda, Buea , just to name a few. This has caused  so much damaged in terms of properties loss, lost of lives and the displacement of families.
These flooding which is attributed to climate change could have been avoided if proper adaptation and mitigation measures such as; early warning schemes, effective drainage system, flood control infrastructures, strong laws prohibiting the occurrence of wetlands, proper waste deposal methods by the population to avoid drainage paths blockage where being included in the urban planning scheme.
As a developing country already been faces with alot of challenges, climate crisis further multiples these challenges, hindering economic growth and development. In the absence of a collective effort between the government and it citizens, there is no assurance of better days ahead.

Hello Sandrine! This is your mentor James!
First of all, sorry for the late comment!

I'm saddened to hear about the flooding that occurred during the recent rainfall. In that sense, urban planning is certainly important not only for environmental aspects but also for the safety of the future residents within the city.

Thanks for the meaningful report! Looking forward to reading your next one!

Hi Sandrine! This is your mentor Yewon.

Before I begin to write comments, I feel sorry to hear that the flooding caused some damage in Cameroon. It reminds me of the rainfall in Korea last summer, which also caused some casualties and property damage.

As we cannot control rainfall or climate situations, I think it is important to respond properly, and as you mentioned above, urban planning would be a very important element of it!

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us!!
