March [Theme Report] - Wildlife Preservation

by Cheryl Chong Yee Ting | 28-03-2023 23:37 recommendations 0

Wildlife preservation refers to the protection and conservation of animals and their natural habitats. It is essential for maintaining biodiversity and ensuring the survival of endangered species.

Over the last four decades, human activities have greatly pushed some animal species to near extinction with an estimated loss of about 10,000 species per year accounting for losing half of the world's wildlife population. For examples, deforestation are to be blame for putting rare animals like the  Orangutan in Borneo and the White Rhinoceros in Kenya to near extinction in the wilderness.

Why is Wildlife Preservation important, you may ask?

Well, this is because of Biodiversity and Ecological balance in our planet's ecosystem. Wildlife preservation helps to maintain biodiversity, which is essential for the health of ecosystems. Biodiversity ensures that ecosystems are resilient and able to adapt to changing conditions such as climate change. In addition, wildlife plays a key role in maintaining ecological balance. For example, predators help control the the populations of their prey, which are known as "Biological Control" by farmers or land owners with crops.

Furthermore, the human well-being is key to wildlife preservation. Economic benefits such as nature-based tourism, bird-watching and hiking trails are industries that rely heavily on healthy ecosystems and the services they provide such as clean water and air. Lastly, cultural significance, for example, can help to maintain traditional and cultural values. The people of Sabah, Malaysia, build homestays for tourists while learning the cultural dances passed down by ancestors to entertain guests and families as a form of side hustle.

By preserving wildlife and their habitats, we can ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and our future generations.

As Paul Oxton once said, "Only when the last of the animals' horns, tusks, skin, and bones have been sold out, only will mankind realize that money can never buy back our wildlife".

Hello Cheryl! This is your mentor James!
First of all, sorry for the late comment!

I see that you have explored the reason behind preservation of our ecosystem! That would naturally lead to the importance of maintaining biodiversity of the planet. I personally think the most important reason for biodiversity is its role as a buffer. Abnormal climate changes may occur even without global warming, but regions with rich biodiversity would be able to recover faster than the regions with only a few species.

Thanks for the meaningful report! Looking forward to reading your next one!

Hello Cheryl! This is your mentor Yewon.

Thank you for your great report! You have written a report about the reason why we should preserve wildlife! I totally agree with your opinion that human well-being highly depends on wildlife preservation, in terms of several factors including economic benefit.

Also, I like the part where you cited Paul Oxton's saying! I think it's a perfect closing of the report!

Thank you again for sharing, and I hope to read your next report, too!!
