[MAY THEMATIC REPORT]-EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT- REPORT 3.

by Baraka E Urio | 16-05-2023 14:45 recommendations 1

Most of big industries around Tanzania and even world wide, uses water in their internal purposes such as Laundry, machine cooling, hot water system, cleaning of factory and machines(CIP), and sometimes most of these processes uses chemicals like NaOH, HCl and other chemicals either for cleaning and other purposes. These chemical and microbiological polluted water can't be ejected direct to rivers and other water bodies due to high load of COD, and BOD.

In Tanzania, National Environmental Management Council (NEMC), Is the national council that monitor all processes and activities to conform with Tanzania environmental policies and rules. Due to strict rule of ejected water from big plants that uses chemicals (Non-Kosher and organics factories) their water should conform with water specification.

Due to that most of big factories having the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) which is used to reduce pH, TPC, COD, BOD, Conductivity, Total dissolved solids in water to an acceptable level.

Tanzania water specification is pH-5.5-9.0, COD->250(mg/l), BOD->500(mg/l), TDS->600(mg/l).

Most of Factories contains technologies which are mostly used to clean contaminated water for safe ejection to water bodies or even re-using too.
Their way of treatment is similar to most of waste water treatment plants(See last two May reports ), where by Sieving point is for filtration, Standardization dam (For regulating pH-If pH is more basic HCl is added to reduce pH, or if pH is low NaOH is added to raise pH), Aeration dam for increasing oxygen level in water, then anaerobic tank for reducing organic components in water, finally carbon filtration for reducing sand and gravels in water.
After all these processes end up, samples will taken to laboratories for confirmatory test if they comply with government specifications or not.
If water didn't pass the specification, reprocessing has to be done once again to lower the exceeded parameter to an acceptable level.

This is one of the most important Eco-Technology applied to most of chemical using industries to reduce the rate of water pollution around my country region.

    Hello Baraka! This is your mentor James.

    Wow, I didn't realize that this report was your Part 3 report of your wastewater treatment! What an interesting series of reports! Waste fluid from industrial sector definitely needs filtration and sedimentation treatments prior to discharge since it may critically impact the marine environment if unsupervised!

    Thanks for sharing your ideas on this topic! Hope you keep it going!

    Hello Baraka! This is your mentor Yewon.

    You have written an informative report with several reliable data!
    Especially, you have explained ETP with specific numbers, which was very interesting!
    One thing I want to say is that please leave sources of picture when you add a picture on your report:D

    Thank you for sharing. Let's keep up the good work!
