THE NEW HOME By Sanuli Weihena Gamage. ¡°Sustainable Development is a dynamic process in which communities anticipate and accommodate the needs of current and future generations in ways that reproduce and balance local social, economic, and ecological systems, and link local actions to global concerns.¡± - Berke and Conroy (2000) -
Urban management in Sri Lanka faces challenges such as a lack of coordination and collaboration among government institutions, the absence of an integrated policy framework, inadequate guidelines on settlement planning, land shortage and affordable housing issues, and the need for sustainable infrastructure and environmental practices. Consequently, many major cities do not have proper waste disposal capabilities, and have also become more susceptible to natural disasters due to the loss of flood retention areas, filling of wetlands and poor storm water drainage systems. It is everyone¡¯s responsibility to take measures to promote sustainable land management, waste disposal methods, and transportation systems to alleviate traffic congestion and improve environmental resilience in an efficient and sustainable manner by addressing these multifaceted challenges through comprehensive policies, collaboration, and long-term planning.
Some notable housing projects in the Colombo (Colombo is the executive and judicial capital and largest city of Sri Lanka by population) that focus on environmentally friendly and energy-efficient designs while providing comfortable living spaces include The Altair Residencies, Havelock City Park Tower, Clearpoint Residencies, and the Sahaspura Housing Project. These sustainable housing projects prioritize energy efficiency, environmental sensitivity, and social well-being. It incorporate features like green spaces, soundproofing, rainwater harvesting, and solar power generation. The Clearpoint Residences boasts several sustainability features. Its self-sustaining watering system reduces energy and water consumption. The planted terraces provide a unique character and act as natural sound absorbers and shade providers. The green cover contributes to a natural cooling system, reducing the need for air conditioning. Solar panels generate electricity, and rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems are implemented to reduce water usage. Additionally, the Sahaspura Housing Project accommodates the low income society by meeting the shelter needs of the urban poor while ensuring social acceptance, economic viability, and environmental friendliness. It also provides sustainable housing for those residing in environmentally sensitive areas, such as retention areas and low-lying lands.
By integrating many sustainable practices, these projects contribute to a greener and more livable urban environment in Colombo. Let us all work to overcome the challenges and build sustainable cities that are vibrant, inclusive and resilient all across Sri Lanka. Let¡¯s take that next step to enhance the quality of life for all residents.

Hello Sanuli! This is your mentor James.
I see that Sri Lanka is facing multiple challenges in pursuing sustainable urban development, especially regarding municipal waste treatment and efficient drainage systems. Nevertheless, proactive efforts in green architecture and sustainable buildings can be seen as well like the projects in Colombo! Sustainability should be prioritized by many other rapidly developing countries in order to ensure a safe, clean future for our future generations.
Thanks for sharing your ideas on this topic! Hope you keep it going!

Hello Sanuli! This is your mentor Yewon.
You started your report with Berke and Conroy's saying, which was very impressive.
Also, the example of Colombo you explained in your report was quite interesting!
I think other cities can learn technologies like self-sustaining watering systems and apply them to themselves.
Thank you for sharing. Great job!
