[Free report] COP 28 comes to town

As COP 28 (Conference of Parties¡¯ 28th iteration) begins in Dubai today, it would be the culmination of year long ground work laid. Last week as the environmental campaigns, conferences and activities of past six months reached a crescendo, there is an anticipation of finding a way forward in challenging climate issues. For the uninitiated, UN Climate Change Conferences, which take place every year, are the world¡¯s only multilateral decision-making forum where almost every nation of the world participates. They are held within the framework of United Nations Framework on Climate Change ( UNFCC).

The agenda of the COP is focused on discussing ways to address the climate crisis. Limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degree Celsius, helping vulnerable communities to find ways to adapt to the consequences of climate change, and above all, achieving net zero emissions by the year 2050 is on the table at COP. With contributors from all fields and walks of life allowed to air their views and suggestions, it is by all accounts the the biggest conference on climate. A crucial part of COP are Climate Negotiations. They either result in new agreements and treaties, or make revisions on the existing ones. The final text is agreed only after consensus is reached amongst all member nations. Some of the binding treaties like Kyoto Protocol resulted from this activity.
The COP is also the place where countries which have agreed to and signed Paris Agreement (2015) submit their Nationally Determined Contributions ( NDCs).

The event line-up is wide and varied and has an impressive list of speakers and panelists. It includes discussions on energy transition by inputs from decarbonising industry, supercomputing technology in climate research, on the role of philanthropy and business in finding climate solutions, sustainable energy and clean tech and even green careers. The climate resilience and success stories would also be provided a platform to be showcased. The future climate policies, the role of entrepreneurs as climate heroes, the  adjustments to be made in food systems and even educational system are all up for airing at COP28.

Apart from the accredited parties like climate negotiators and observer delegates, the NGOs and general population can also participate in COP 28. Accordingly, the event venue at Expo City, Dubai includes two zones:
The Blue Zone- open for accredited delegates like country negotiators,  NGOs, International Government Organisations and agencies, media and world leaders. It is the area marked for formal negotiations and serious discussions.
The Green Zone- open for non-accredited delegates like youth groups, general population, the private sector and even indigenous groups. It is the space where collective actions can transform climate policy into concrete outcomes. Technical conferences, businesses showcasing their innovations, and events fostering collaboration on climate issues would take place here.

At Expo City, the sprawling venue of this climate conference, dedicated hubs like Energy Transition hub, Climate Finance Hub, Greening Education hub and others provide curious individuals and decision-makers an opportunity to learn, get inspired, and collaborate to accelerate climate solutions. As 70,000 delegates and a large number of enthusiastic UAE residents turn up at Expo City, Dubai, between 30 th November to 12 December, the eco-conscious world is keeping its hopes high to unite, act and deliver.
