[December Thematic Report] Problems of Urbanization

by Baekjin Kim | 27-02-2024 05:51 recommendations 0

Urbanization, the population shift from rural to urban areas, is happening continuously worldwide. Cities and certain areas become urban and become the major working place for the people. However, the overpopulation and the pollution that they create is detrimental. Several problems are being created, but the major problems such as the waste problems and the loss of natural ecosystems heavily damage the environment.

As more and more people move to urban places, the cities are becoming more overpopulated. As a result, more pollution is being involved in the major cities. According to Greentumble, by the year 2050, 70% of the human population on Earth will live in cities. Consequently, the population shift from rural to urban places is proportional to environmental problems. These problems eventually cause extreme pollution through transportation and industries, and even light and noise can cause pollution. Light pollution, for example, disrupts the biological rhythms of organisms that are involved in the natural night and daylight cycle. Moreover, noise pollution can cause harm to the organisms¡¯ communication abilities due to the excessive noise levels that they are exposed to.

In addition, the human population that lives in urban areas consumes countless resources and energy to keep everything maintained. These cities mostly depend on these energy systems, which eventually harm the environment through pollution, as mentioned above. Likewise, the loss of natural ecosystems rapidly increases around the world, as cities tend to expand their land along with the growing population and their demand for living lands. These numerous problems correlate to the rapid urbanization in the world. To stop this, people should at least individually try to reduce pollution by reducing energy usage or to reduce using electricity to not disturb the ecosystems through light or sound.

    Hello, this is mentor Seeun.
Good job illustrating the problems of urbanization!
Of course, there are good things that come with it, such as increased infrastructure and job opportunities. However, we must not forget that this is all accomplished at nature??s expense.
    Thank you for your report.
