Cleanliness has been acclaimed to be next to Godliness. This has been an age long adage that we have lives by. On the contrary, this generation of youths does not have such an attitude instilled in them. Last academic year, my organization decided t undertakes a voluntary teaching exercise in St. Joseph?s secondary school, Main motor road, where we have taught till now. Sanitation and hygienic practices is quite low in this institution which has made one to wonder what the future holds for us all. Here are few instances to support my article:

There is a huge proliferation of plastics and non- recyclables in the classrooms after school and during lunch. Sierra Leone as a country do not have the facility to do undertake recycling of plastics materials and as such many of the pupils after having their lunch, do not put these plastics into the trash can s but will deposit it on the floor which leads to littering and improper disposal presenting such a ugly sight always.

Furthermore, the absence of litter cans and refuse bins have compounded the situation in the school. There is an old and rust container at the entrance of the school which is about 200 meters from the main school buildings and pupils do not use this trash can at all so after they are done eating, they just litter it which is quite problematic for us all.

As an ambassador, I have started the campaign against filth in this school. This has been welcomed by all and sundry but such an exercise requires some huge capital so I have been written some partnership letters to the Ministry of Health and sanitation and Masada to help provide trash cans for the schools involve in this campaign. I am yet to get a response but with time, it will be resolved. I believe that we should minimize filth if we actually want to maintain a healthy population always.
