How we remove Green

by | 21-03-2014 19:03 recommendations 0

An appointment was set with an social activist. She invited me to countryside near Capital Dhaka. I was late, i had to reach there by my own. The place was a half hour journey by boat from capital Dhaka. That trip inspired me to write about it.

Dhaka is surrounded with some rivers. Buriganga, Turag and Shitalaksha are major. Nearly a decade ago government declared all of them as Ecological Critical Areas (ECA) under the ECA Act 1999. But still they are being polluted rapidly. This story is about somewhere related with one of these rivers mentioned earlier.

Look at the photo. The water is as black as my hair. The story of its color is so sad. About 15 million people live in Dhaka city. All the sewerage system is connected into these rivers. The dumps and wastage are thrown into rivers without any hesitation. Thus the river water got polluted. Factories dump their chemical wastage without following the code. Without any treatment they dump the chemical waste into the river. Its hard for me to write about it, but its the real scenario. We have engineers and administrations who know the equation to control it. But corruption is ruining our future.

This how we harm the ecosystem. This how we remove green from Mother Earth. There are lot ways to act green. It may take some more time, but there are ways. Technology can give you solutions. If you have the interest to save earth, to save environment you should invest.

Sun itself is feeling shy. It is saying, "Hey Mankind, you should make best use of me, my light, my heat and energy. Alas! you are burning coal, gas and oil. You are making this Earth non-liveable."

See this brick field.  Landlord or some powerful guy fill part of this river. He might sell the land or build brick field himself. This brick field doesn't have any legal validation from authority. It is producing bricks and continuously contributing in destroying ecosystem.

Do you have any idea about the little machine carried by boat. Its a pump. It can help you fill canals or river with sand. Within some days you can have land produced in a gigantic and magical way. It is little and sweet, but it have huge motivation to destroy ecosystem. I don't hate it, its merely a machine. I hate and refuse the human running it for evil purpose.

This little champ helped someone to make this land in this river. The river now gets narrow. People now a day call it a canal!!!

You may call it a report. But its a story to me. The story that can make you think for the future generation. The story that can raise some awareness within you. The story that insist you to act green.

See this guy is thinking for the future for sure. He started thinking for his next generation. What about you??

The pictures throw many messages to me. I read a book(fiction) about sorcerers. Human finds magical power to solve the most of social & environmental problems. But you know what? People commercialize the magic power and put price tag on it. And environmental problems get deepen. Well, the message the book gives to us is, we already have 'magical' technology to reduce environmental problems but we weight much more on 'money' than environment. Your story gave me similar message. This is how human removes green from the earth. Thank you for quality article. :)

wow, the first picture of black water freezed me. its seems the Dissolved oxygen is zero, COD and BOD are high.i guess no trace of aquatic life. and the chimney near the cultivated land what will be the food quality.

Very impressive galib. your picture story was very good unmasking the bitter reality of the area. I am hopeful that the area must be aware and motivated to protection than further destruction.

Thanks Ghalib for a touching story. You portrayed some bitter facts through this story. The picture where smoke from chimney is directly reaching sun(in the picture) is shame on mankind. Further saddening is to know that people are openly throwing waste in river without any objection from civic municipalities etc. Rivers are part of biodiversity and should be maintained rather than polluting like this.
