What is World Water Day?

World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.

Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater. In 2014, World Water Day will be on "Water and Energy". A brief overview of the different themes that have been the focus of World Water Day celebrations is available below.

What is The Importance of Water?

With two thirds of the earth's surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 60 percent of it, it is evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth. Water circulates through the land just as it does through the human body, transporting, dissolving, replenishing nutrients and organic matter, while carrying away waste material. Further in the body, it regulates the activities of fluids, tissues, cells, lymph, blood and glandular secretions.

An average adult body contains 42 litres of water and with just a small loss of 2.7 litres he or she can suffer from dehydration, displaying symptoms of irritability, fatigue, nervousness, dizziness, weakness, headaches and consequently reach a state of pathology. Dr F. Batmanghelidj, in his book 'your body's many cries for water', gives a wonderful essay on water and its vital role in the health of a water 'starved' society. He writes: "Since the 'water' we drink provides for cell function and its volume requirements, the decrease in our daily water intake affects the efficiency of cell activity........as a result chronic causes symptoms that equal disease..."

What We Did?

We use water for various needs like to drink, shower, agriculture, transportation, chemical uses etc.So we wanted to start an action so as to make people more consious about water and saving it fort he future because we know the importance of that liquid. In Turkey we have just 18% of water which will be enough until May but then we will have to leave the country if there will not be any rain. This problem is not only Turkey?s problem, but also a global one.We all know there are countries like Equatorial Guinea and so on which do not have any water even to drink. Therefore that thoughts forced us to do a good thing for us,for all of us.We prepared some brochures to distribute people and wrote some slogans on cartoons and walked about 7,2 mile(from Kartal to Bostanci (ISTANBUL)).

Above all we should now what we can do to conserve water let me give you some simple steps you can to at your home as well. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth or washing the dishes to save up to 8 gallons of water!Keep your showers under 5 minutes long and use less hot water. Make sure every tap in your home has a high efficiency faucet aerator.By the same token dont say it changes nothing just me to do these, changes starts by yourself!

Last mut not least each one of us to maintain and improve the quality and quantity of fresh water available to future generations.Do not let your children to blame you one day for leaving them without water.Do not let others to make yoour children do not know that ??sea??,??river??,??snow??,??WATER?? mean. ?Water is the driving force in nature.? Said Leonardo Da Vinci. We are nothing withouth water,we are just dusts.Yoou are 60% water, save yourself!

Thanks for highlighting water day & importance of water. We must conserve water as it is so vital for our survival. There are so many people who do not have access to safe drinking water. Happy Water day.
