We either flourish or perish!

As I pick up my pen this morning to write my first article as Nigeria's Ambassador for Eco-Generation, I look around me with a great hope of finding a cause however little, for ecstasy about my existence on earth, for an assurance that my kind will be here forever, for a little confirmation that this earth, our earth, will live for as long as it should. But I'm caught by a sudden grip of fear!

I'm scared to walk in the sun because I do not know which toxic substances are in it. I'm scared to dive down in pools because I'm not sure how contaminated these water bodies are. I'm scared for the birds in the air whose liberty to fly is no more guaranteed. I'm scared there won't be trees anymore and beautiful butterflies to herald the dawn of a bright, new season. But much more, I'm scared earth will no longer be here when I wake up tomorrow, (if I ever do).

Humanity stands at a defining moment in history. We are confronted more than ever, with the perpetuation of the most offensive activities against earth. Mankind is trapped in the selfish web of an inordinate desire to satisfy its far-reaching needs with little or no concern for their environmental consequences and all over the world today, earth is dying and its voice goes terribly unheard.
But this outward manifestation of our negligence shows the kind of creatures we are and what we must become in order to survive. Man has finally come to a point in history where he either flourishes or perishes depending on his approach to his further use of the natural environment.

Beyond the shadow of a doubt, we are left with the consciousness of the fact that there is never a time in history other than now, for a more concerted effort on the need to conserve nature and prevent it from its present roller course slide into the cold winter of oblivion.
We can no longer take for granted the reality that our natural systems – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the forests and land that provide us food, shelter and other necessities of life are vulnerable to contamination, destruction and can therefore REACT  against us!

We may just be digging our own graves if we shut our eyes to this reality. We may be dying ourselves, if we only live that earth may die. We have but two options: We either FLOURISH or PERISH. There is no middle fate!

Yes, the more I study it, the more I feel sure that there's no halfway in our future. Flourish or Perish. Thank you for insightful article, Atitiebi :)
