Beach Sand Mining in Liberia

Beach Sand Mining in Liberia

The mining of beach sand in Liberia is at a higher pace, which needs to be stopped.

People mining sand on the beach here in Liberia do not have permit from the agency in charge but rather go on digging out the sand on the beach for personal and domestic use.

n  It last happened that the mining of beach sand have caused many damages because for every time a person mines the sand on the beach the sea water leaves where it is and will be encroaching upon land. This caused a lot of people to be homeless, died, and many different casualties.

Effects

Destroys the buildings that are along the beach way.

Makes the beach land not cool for relaxation.

        Casualties on human lives

My Recommendations

I recommend that the Liberian government should have strong laws that governed the beach.

Before anyone mines sand on the beach they should get permit from the Agency or governmental entity in charge.

As Tunza Eco- Generation member, who wants to save and protect the earth, will take the initiatives to carried on an awareness to others to stopped the mining of sand on the beach in order to have a save environment.

Thanks for raising this concern , Burton. You are doing a good job by spreadng awareness of detrimental effects of Beach sand mining. Sand mining not only destroys the beaches but also erodes the shoreline and hence the protection from natural events. It is very damaging to the beach fauna and flora, ruinous to beach aesthetics, and frequently causes environmental damage to other coastal ecosystems associated with the beach such as wetlands.

This is very disturbing. One there must be proper rules for taking sand like this & another is Beach sanctity must be preserved.

It seems to be related with the recent building boom in Africa. Building super-high buildings can't come first instead of preserving the natural legacy. To restore the lost sand, it will take thousands of years. Burton, you did a really right action, I feel so proud of you :)

Did you have a workshop on sand mining issue? I guess what you did was a really great awareness activity. If the situation is the serious like you mentioned, I guess Liberian government should more concern about the sand mining problem and set some strict regulation on that. Thanks for sharing, Burton.

I am one of those who will soon get the impact of Beach Sand mining because of my closeness to the beach. 1ox to the Liberian Government for putting stop to beach sand mining. Instead of beach sand people are now using river sand in other areas.
