I have always known that a collective spirited efforts towards saving the environment is the only way to go and it appears the newly inaugurated government of Anambra state, Nigeria are buying into that idea.
Now,going by the initial steps of this government here, they seem to be very interested in matters that concerns the environment.
First, the government has introduced the "Keep Anambra State Clean" project which they are following up strictly. Even the monthly state wide clean-up exercise, which is the norm in almost all states in Nigeria, has received huge attention. There have been such projects before by previous government administration but the problem has always been the level of implementation and its consistency. They just recently arrested over 70 persons who did not comply with environmental laws the statewide cleanup exercise for the month of April and now, those defaulters, who were either caught driving/walking around during the exercise or refused to clean their environment, are facing moderate fines or short jail terms to help discourage others from neglecting their environment.
Again, I had earlier written an article on the Ambassadors report page on how rickety and abandoned cars on the streets and roads add to global warming, now, I am happy to report that this particular state in Nigeria has commenced the removal of abandoned vehicles on the road as well as slowly eliminating the rickety ones. The exercise commenced two weeks ago and I am just so excited that this is happening when I am raising awareness on the issue.
Also, as the raining season is about coming to full force, this state has announced the massive clearing of drainages which is about taking full effect and this will help prevent heavy flooding as all floods will be properly channelled.
And then, I was all the more excited when I learnt that the state has purchased four new mass transit buses for her Civil servants in various locations of the state. I decided to go and see this myself and off I went to the state secretariat, via public transport, and immediately I entered the complex,I turned left and there was the buses,Toyota coaster buses to be precise. The four buses take care of civil servants in different locations in the state, that is, a particular town or area has a bus to take care of workers in that environment. Though it is yet to cover the entire state, it is a positive news for the environment.
My happiness over this development owes much to the fact that this will help reduce enormous carbon footprint that comes from the private cars of these workers if they are allowed to make use of their individual cars. It is even more environment-friendly considering the fact that there is a huge number of workers in that secretariat hence, getting them to use public transport will do mother earth a lot of good.
Though this government may not know what this last measure is achieving for the environment,I fully understand and mine is to draw their attention to the benefits of these measures to the environment and recommend other environment-friendly measures as they are basically interested in having a clean environment.

Thanks for updating us with these positive developments in Nigeria. Really glad to know that authorities there are taking environment seriously and besides putting laws in place they are monitoring as well with imposing penalities .
