Recycling Art Competition in My School!!!

Environmental Council Events Team, which is the committee that I am part of, held a Recycled Art Competition. In light of Environmental Council's No Impact Week 2014, Events Team has initiated in running a competition in which participants were required to reuse and recycle the waste materials and make a new masterpiece that is innovative, meaningful, and durable. The available waste materials were 1.5L plastic bottles, old magazines and posters, ring pulls, soda cans, cereal boxes, and many more. Glues, scissors, and tapes were also provided. The participants of this event had to be composed in a group of four people. Thus, this competition not only promoted the importance of recycling but also stressed importance on collaboration and cooperation. The theme of this competition was "Advanced Technology". All the groups therefore were required to devise something that was related to the theme. The winning group won cacti and jeepney souvenirs made out of recycled cans.

As aforementioned, the purpose of this event was to promote the effectiveness and the awareness of recycling old materials. Many people overlook upon the waste and used materials. However, this event aimed to transform commonly held stereotypes of waste as a useless materials and possibly open up each individual's mind to become more creative and sustainable as an Earthian.

Not only was I part of coordinating this event, but I also participated in this event. In a group of four students, we completed constructing a space shuttle. We used big plastic bottles, magazine covers and ring pulls to decorate the space shuttle, and bottle caps to represent the windows of the space shuttle. We also put a picture of a polar bear on the space shuttle because we wanted to promote awareness of endangered species due to global warming, a phenomenon caused by air pollution, greenhouse gas effect, and many more.

My group was not able to win the first place, but we were satisfied that we were able to win third place! Although we did not get any special prizes, we were very satisfied how we all made contributions and efforts to live more sustainably and help reduce the amount of waste materials thrown away. Recycled Art Competition provided me with an in-depth experience of how recycling materials not only is an enjoyable activity but also makes us feel proud of how we were able to contribute in making our mother Earth a cleaner place! I thank every team member and participants of this event for such a memorable experience!
