ICIMOD Knowledge Park, Godavari, Nepal

by | 18-06-2014 01:52 recommendations 0

To my bad luck, I couldn't celebrate world environment day , the way I really wanted due to my educational tour. However, my 10 days tour to eastern part of Nepal along with Darjeeling and Sikkim in India was very fruitful. I must claim that I gained much more practical knowledge from my tour and enjoyed too. Among various places of our visit, I got my eye caught to some places where initiatives have taken  create healthier and greener environment along with the biodiversity conservation. Those places include ICIMOD(International Centre for  Integrated Mountain Development) knowledge park at Godavari,  Himalayan Mountaineering Institute at Darjeeling and City Cleanness at Sikkim.
My trip to ICIMOD knowledge park at Godavari  is second  and I have been so eager to share you about it. About the first trip, I have shared you in previous article in  brief and now today I am going to share about it in detail.
The ICIMOD knowledge park at Godavari, established in 1993 at Southern slope of Kathmandu valley covers  the area 30 hectares. The site was originally named as "Godavari Trial and Demonstration Site" and was intended for testing and demonstration of various methodologies related to mountain development and sustainable farming practices on the sloppy lands of mid hills of Hindu Kush Himalayan region. This is the site, where the different technologies viable for the sustainable development and farming can be tested, selected and demonstrated, farmers can be trained. This site is also the resource of germplasm and associated flora and fauna diversity. Ultimately, this site is underpinning the ICIMOD's objective poverty reduction and conservation of natural resources.
To test and modify technologies and methodologies for sustainable land use, to demonstrate the viable option for rehabilitation of degraded land , increase the income using mountain niches, to collect germplasm of multipurpose plants, to improve the skills and technical knowledge of concerned people, and to disseminate the appropriate technologies, methods , information and knowledge are the main objective of the knowledge park.

At initial stage of the establishment, the site was degraded and the initial activities focused on the rehabilitation of degraded land systems. Now, land has been restored in semi-natural forest.
The activities are linked within the holistic approach that covers a broad range of possibilities for livelihoods and quality of life in remote areas. Here, the selected slopes have been converted to terrace farming, orchards of different types of fruits, demonstration site for various agricultural technologies, income generating activities and water harvesting technique. Also, demonstration models of various renewable energy technologies have been introduced in collaboration with local NGOs. At present, the approaches to be tested and demonstrated have been increasing in considerable amount. All the plants grown here are organic . Thus ,the result  reflect the result that farmers of remote areas get even at little access to the expensive technologies.
Visit to such a illustrious park was one of the memorable and important part of our educational tour. Strictly speaking, I really loved the place and would like to suggest everyone to visit if you get chance to go to Kathmandu. And I will be sharing more about my visit in upcoming articles.

@ Pratap thank you for your feedback. Yes, there are many places in my locality with the scope of being park. But what it needs is proper management. It would be very nice if we can establish such parks in different parts of the country and they would contribute a lot in the sustainable development.
