Our environment has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.Global warming is now a real threat and our planet's rising temperatures are causing ice caps to melt causing sea levels to rise. This in turn is threatening to inundate millions of islands and lowlying coastal areas which are home to over one-third of the Earth's population.
The threat to Small Island Developing States also known by its acronym SIDS is the focus of this year's World Environment Day . This was also the theme of the WED workshop held at Rajagiri International School by youth sustainability organisation , Green Hope UAE .
It was a great privilege for Green Hope UAE to be invited to hold this event at Rajagiri International School . Scores of pupils took enthusiastic part in this workshop which had interactive workshops on various sustainability issues.
Global warming , climate change , ozone layer depletion , carbon footprint are all very relevant words to our lives today and students , who are the citizens of the future , need to be aware of them and their long term impacts so that they can promote sustainable lifestyles. This was the objective behind this academy .
The workshop included an interactive quiz session which highlighed the theme of this year's World Environment Day which is "Raise your voice , not the sea level". At the conclusion of the academy, students signed a green pledge which were stuck on a cutout of a tree aptly titled the "Tree of Hope"
