The global environment outlook is one of great concern as all scientific indicators point towards higher atmospheric pollution levels , rise in global ambient temperatures , degradation of natural resources and an alarming rate of biodiversity loss . In this context , World Environment Day , which is celebrated on 5th June , assumes a great significance as it seeks to draw everyone's attention to the crisis facing our planet.
Young people have a very important role to play in environmental conservation since they are the generations of the future. They stand to suffer the most from lack of resources in future as a consequence of the current environmental degradation . Thus , young people need to be firstly aware of this danger and secondly be empowered to influence action at all levels which will not only conserve the environment but also take steps in maintaining a balance between the three pillars of sustainable development.
This was the objective behind an awareness programme which I conducted for the students of the primary section at my school , Deira International School . The enthusiasm and the eagerness of these young minds was amazing and they were extremely concerned about the various environmental issues that we discussed . They learnt about the concept of carbon footprint and how a change in their lifestyles could make a positive impact on reducing carbon emissions.
The awareness programme also included an enviromental quiz through which these young participants learnt about the theme of WED2014 . The event ended with a planting session in the school garden , with the young children participating enthusiastically .

Good job , Kehkashan. I am sure your awareness programme was much more than an awareness programme.

Very nice work! It is really nice to get young people in connection with the environment as something friendly rather than an objective of exploitation!
