Dalbergia Latifolia (A threatened tree species of Nepal)

Dalbergia latifolia or Indian Rosewood (locally known as Satisal or Sastal), belonging to the Fabaceae family, was widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical forests in many countries around the world. The heartwood of Satisal is exceptionally dense, non-porous, highly resistant to termites and decay fungi and durable which make it in high demand for the production of premium-grade luxury furniture, paneling, veneers, artworks, musical instruments and many other things. This tree species provides many ecological services and well medicinal benefits. In context of Nepal, this tree species was widely distributed in the past, however, over-exploitation of natural habitat, forest fire, over grazing and illegal logging have resulted in the significant declination in its population throughout the terai (tropical) range of Nepal. According to IUCN Red List, it has now become a vulnerable tree species with very few conservation priorities. Very few research studies have been conducted globally to find out the major threats for the conservation of Satisal; however, the research lacks major causes for decrease in its population and measures for its conservation and promotion. Thus, it is necessary to conduct different research studies regarding threats to the target species, major causes in its depletion and possible re-establishment practices to conserve and sustainably use its remaining genetic resources.
