Low Maintenance Ways To Keep Your Yard Tidy

For homeowners, yard work can be a low-priority task that is undesirable and a waste of time. However, if you are not willing to pay someone to keep your yard tidy, then it is best to find small ways to keep your yard looking decent with little to no work. Here are a few ways to perform these tasks professionally and efficiently.

Starting With The Right Tools

Before you begin any yard work, you want to prepare yourself. Make sure that your gardening gloves are salvageable from the previous year and decide if you need to purchase a new pair. Rub a little lotion on your hands before putting them on to give yourself an extra layer of protection.

Check to see if you have all the right gardening tools. You will need hand pruners and a wheelbarrow to make the task easier. The wheelbarrow will help get rid of gardening materials and debris.

Clean Up After The Snow Has Melted

Once the snow has disappeared and the warmth of the sun is ready to stick around, spend a little time picking up the rocks and branches scattered around the yard. You may come across trash, dead grass, unwanted gravel and leaves. By tidying up a little, you will see a big difference around your yard. You can even add a little fertilizer to give your lawn a healthy start for the spring.

Next, get rid of those annoying weeds by using a weed killer and then decide on the type of mulch you want to use. Explore all of your options, you can choose a colored recycled rubber mulch or a kind that requires more maintenance. However, be attentive to your trees. Most people will over mulch their trees causing a mulch suffocation effect.

Time To Mow Your Lawn

Lawn mowing is something that is mandatory when keeping your yard up. However, some people are cutting their yard the wrong way. When you are mowing, try to change the direction often. Run the mower horizontally, vertically and diagonal to keep the lawn healthy. Also, try to avoid mowing your yard when the grass is wet.

Take a moment to get rid of those pesky leaves in the yard. Many trees will shed leaves during the winter. Don¡¯t go too crazy with it by cleaning up every leaf. Keeping a few in your yard is beneficial to our pollinators and wildlife. By removing the heavy piles of leaves, you will eliminate mold and decay. However, you do not want to rake in a wet ground. Wait until the temperatures outside are warm.

While you are raking your leaves, keep an eye out for small pests and bugs. If you spot any pest like an aphid or termites, then apply some kind of bug control to keep the pests away. Some insects like butterflies and bees can benefit your yard, they are natural enemies to pests.

Before applying a pesticide, read the directions carefully. State and federal laws require pesticides to have a detailing label and restriction of use. If you are uncomfortable with using the product, then contact a professional pest control service.

Get Rid Of Those Bare Spots

If you can't stand the thought of having bare spots in your yard, then try spot seeding. Begin the process in March or April and apply the seeds before you use a pre-emergent. This will give the seeds enough time to establish in the soil and germinate. Take a moment to steel rake the bare patch area to loosen the soil and then add some compost in the area. Sprinkle your grass seed in the area and keep the area moist by adding grass clippings or straw matting. Dry spots are a warning sign that harmful pests are inhibiting your yard. Keep an eye out for them and contact a pest control specialist if you are unsure.
